From the series:Series: Some Woodcuts of Men of Letters.Inscription content: Lettered in the image with the title and with the printmaker's monogram: 'RB. ft.'.British Museum: Museum number1898,1010.13.Object: RuskinSeries: Some Woodcuts of Men of LettersDesc…riptionPortrait, almost half-length, directed slightly to left, looking away slightly to right, with a thick beard and ear-length lightly waved hair; wearing a dark coat over a paler waistcoat with a white shirt; in a battlemented frame. 1898.Bryden: Etcher, painter and sculptor; born in Coylton, Ayrshire, Scotland, son of a colliery manager; educated at Ayr Academy and initially worked as an architectural assistant in the offices of Hunter and Morris; moved to London and studied at the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools; travelled though Europe and Egypt making etchings; elected associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, 1891, and elected RE 1899; published a folio of 33 prints 'Portraits of Men of Letters', 1899 and 3 volumes of etchings of castles in Ayreshire; after 15 years in London settled in Ayreshire. His work is held by the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, Hunterian Museum, Glasgow, McLean Museum and Art Gallery, Greenock, Rozelle House Gallery, South Ayrshire; in London by the V&A, National Portrait Gallery as well as the British Museum.From the collection of Frederick Ruffner (1926-2014), the founder of Gale Research, Detroit.
