Hohenofen - Kontinuierliche Langsiebpapiermaschine mit integrierter Trockenpartie. Bryan Donkin (1768-1855), englischer Ingenieur und Erfinder, gelernter Papiermacher, der 1806 Henry Fourdrinier (1766-1854) assistierte, seine 'endlos' Papiermaschine zu perfektionieren und zusammen mit Richard Bacon (1755-1844) 1813 eine der ersten Rotationsdruckmaschinen konstruierte und dessen Tintenwalze Industriestandard wurde, betrieb seine Firma Bryan Donkin & Co. in London und lieferte hochentwickelte Maschinen nach ganz Europa, wobei Preußen aufgrund seiner frühen Industrialisierung ein Schlüsselmarkt war. Die Gründung der Patent-Papier-Fabrik (Blattbildungsmaschine), Berlin (Pappelallee / Prenzlauer Berg) war ein staatliches Preußisches Prestigeprojekt, bei dem führende Köpfe der Industrialisierung durch die "Preußische Seehandlung" unter der staatlichen Führung von Christian Peter Wilhelm Beuth (1781-1853) und Christian von Rother (1778-1848) involviert waren. 1835 ist das Jahr, in dem die Weichen für das Ende der staatlichen Führung und der Übergang in den Privatbesitz des Konsortium um Friedrich Wilhelm von Krause (1802-1877) stattfand. Die "Seehandlung" besaß in Hohenofen ein 1833 stillgelegtes Seigerhüttenwerk und suchte nach einer rentablen Nachnutzung für die brachliegenden Gebäude, welche ideal geeignet erschienen für die Erweiterung der Patent-Papier-Fabrik. Während in Berlin Massenware produziert wurde, sollte das Zweigwerk Hohenofen besonders feine Papiere, wie Wasserzeichenpapiere für staatliche Dokumente sowie Zeichen- und Schreibpapiere herstellen. Franz Anton Egells (1788-1854), Pionier des Berliner Maschinenbaus und Wegbereiter der industriellen Revolution in Preußen, war der verlängerte Arm von Beuth. Er reiste nach England, um die führende Technik (insbesondere von Bryan Donkin) zu studieren und er war der Mann, der die komplexen Papiermaschinen-Patente für Preußen "entschlüsselte". In seiner Berliner Maschinenbauanstalt (Moabit) fertigte Egells die Dampfmaschinen und mechanischen Komponenten, die für den Betrieb der Patent-Papier-Fabrik notwendig waren. Ohne seine Präzisionsarbeit hätte das "Patent-System" (die Umstellung von Hand- auf Maschinenpapier) in Berlin und später in Hohenofen nicht funktioniert. Die Wahl fiel auf Hohenofen wegen der vorhandenen Wasserkraft und der günstigen Verkehrsanbindung für den Rohstofftransport (Lumpen/Hadern) und den Versand des Papiers nach Berlin. Nous trouvons de ces papiers que la chûte d'eau varie beaucoup aussi bien que la quantitée d'eau de la rivière, et on peut dire que la différence moyenne entre l'eau supérieure et l'eau inférieure varie entre 4 pieds à 6 pieds. Quant aux quantitées d'eau détaillées dans le papier C, nous trouvons qu'elles excedent par 25 pour cent environ les quantitées actuelles fournies par les ouvertures qui y sont décrites. et ainsi au lieu de 150 pieds cubes d'eau par seconde (que vous prénez pour la quantitée moyenne) il faut le reduire un quart, mais nonobstant cela il reste bien suffisamment d'eau pour faire aller les dix cylindres et la machine à fabriquer, les roues à eau etant placées à une hauteur convenable et etant fait d'une maniere propre, et pour ne pas exceder la largeur total qui vous est prescrites.
