In den Warenkorbhardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Bookbinding in Great Britain: Sixteenth to the Twentieth Century, Bryan D. Maggs â" First Edition Publication: London, Maggs Bros Ltd, 1964 Formatting: Square 8vo, pp. 193. Condition Report: Very Good. The original stiff-card wrappers remain structurally sound and vibrant, exhibiting minor shelf-wear and light rubbing to the extremities and spine ends. The rear cream panel shows faint, scattered dust-soiling and subtle age-toning typical of the stock. The spine remains uncreased and square, indicating the volume has seen minimal use. Internally, the text block is clean, tight, and free from foxing or significant blemishes, presenting a crisp, well-preserved reference copy. Catalogue Note: This first edition was limited to a total of 1,400 copies, with this specific example being one of the standard 1,388 issues (lacking the coloured frontispiece reserved for 12 special copies). Compiled by Bryan D. Maggs, with cover design by Pamela A. Neads and photography by R. B. Fleming & Co. Ltd., it remains a cornerstone reference for British bindings. Of paramount importance is a remarkable piece of laid-in ephemera: an original Autograph Note Signed (ANS) by the preeminent twentieth-century bookbinder and sculptor, Edgar Mansfield. Dated September 1967, the handwritten card offers fascinating primary insight into Mansfield's "Animism" bronze sculptures. He details the casting process from wood models and the specific chemical patination used, including chloride of iron, sal ammoniac, and liver of sulphur. Mansfield also explains his artistic philosophy, noting that each viewer must interpret the abstract forms themselves "to give pleasure in form and to stimulate the imagination". While the catalogue itself is relatively obtainable on the open market, the inclusion of this unique manuscript material from a master binder elevates the item's historical significance immensely. Maggs Bros' Catalogue 893 serves as a meticulously detailed historical survey of British bookbinding from the 1500s through the mid-twentieth century. Heavily illustrated, it provides collectors and scholars with essential descriptive references for identifying period styles, notable binders, and the evolution of the craft over four hundred years.
