Leather. Zustand: Very Good. The very scarce second collected edition of these works from English royalists Bruno Ryves and John Barwick, containing the Oxford newsbook 'Mercurius Rusticus'. With four works bound in one, as called for. The second issue of the second collected edition of this work, with leaf A8 cancelled, and rep…laced with quire a8. Illustrated with an engraved title page.Parts I and II of this work, were originally published in Oxford as twenty-one separate numbers between 1643 and 1644, and are the work of Ryves. Parts I has a 1648 title page, and parts to has a 1646 title page, though the pagination and register is continuous between the two.'Mercurius Rusticus' narrates the assaults on Sir John Lucas's house, Wardour Castle, and other mansions, while the second part details the damage done to cathedrals. The intention was to scare the reader with the brutality of parliamentary troopers. As required, John Barwick's 'Querela Cantabrigiensis', 1646, and Ryves' 'Micro-Chronicon', 1647, are included in this title. They each have separate title pages, pagination, and register. These where also issued separately.Barwick, a fellow royalist churchman, offers a satirical response to those opposing the imposition of royalist political and religious oaths on the faculty. He defends the authority of the monarchy and highlights the supposed absurdity and hypocrisy of those who resisted the oaths. With the register A7, a8, B-S8, A-C8, A2, B-G8, H6. Final gathering incorrectly arranged, with leaves H3, H and H2 misplaced. Otherwise, collated, complete. Small losses to head of leaves H3-4, with more significant losses to heads of leaves H and H2. Pages lightly age toned due to paper type, with the odd spot. Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). book.
