The very scarce second collected edition of these works from English royalists Bruno Ryves and John Barwick, containing the Oxford newsbook 'Mercurius Rusticus'. With four works bound in one, as called for. The second issue of the second collected edition of this work, with leaf A8 cancelled, and replaced with quire a8. Illustrated with an engraved title page.Parts I and II of this work, were originally published in Oxford as twenty-one separate numbers between 1643 and 1644, and are the work of Ryves. Parts I has a 1648 title page, and parts to has a 1646 title page, though the pagination and register is continuous between the two.'Mercurius Rusticus' narrates the assaults on Sir John Lucas's house, Wardour Castle, and other mansions, while the second part details the damage done to cathedrals. The intention was to scare the reader with the brutality of parliamentary troopers.As required, John Barwick's 'Querela Cantabrigiensis', 1646, and Ryves' 'Micro-Chronicon', 1647, are included in this title. They each have separate title pages, pagination, and register. These where also issued separately.Barwick, a fellow royalist churchman, offers a satirical response to those opposing the imposition of royalist political and religious oaths on the faculty. He defends the authority of the monarchy and highlights the supposed absurdity and hypocrisy of those who resisted the oaths.With the register A7, a8, B-S8, A-C8, A2, B-G8, H6. Final gathering incorrectly arranged, with leaves H3, H and H2 misplaced. Otherwise, collated, complete. ESTC Citation No. R34574A smart copy of this scarce second collected edition of these royalist works. Rebacked, in a full calf binding with back strip laid down and boards restored. Retaining the original endpapers. Externally, smart. Front hinge a touch strained but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Engraved title page laid down, with minor losses to tail and former owner's inscription to head. Small wormholes from leaf I2 onwards, growing in severity from 'Mico-Chronicon' title page onwards, only affecting one of two words to each page. Small losses to head of leaves H3-4, with more significant losses to heads of leaves H and H2. Pages lightly age toned due to paper type, with the odd spot. Very Good. book.

Internally, a bright copy of this work.Printed without an author attribution, although this work is known to have been written by Bruno Ryves. Following the publication of this newsbook George Wither started a parliamentary counter work under the same title.'Mercurius Rusticus' has a second title page with the imprint 'Oxford printed in the yeare, 1646' although pagination and register are continuous. Following this is 'Querela Cantabrigiensis' which is attributed to John Barwick, although sometimes attributed to Bruno Ryves. There is also an addendum to this latter work after page 28 to the second part of 'Mercurius Rusticus'. Following this there are indexes to part I, to the 'Querela' and 'Mercurius Belgicus' with separate dated title pages. The ESTC notes that quired 3B-D of 'Mercurius Belgicus' are reissued from 'England's Illiads in a nut shell' by Sir George Wharton.Parts I and II of 'Mercurius Rusticus' were originally issued at Oxford as 21 separate newsbooks between 20 May 1643 and 16 March 1664. This is the first edition in book form.ESTC reference no: R203457.Collated, bound without the additional engraved title page listed in the ESTC.Former owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper in pencil 'Bought at the sale of Revd J B Medleys Books, Bath, June 1807.'Contemporary owner's inscription providing a 'life of the author' to the rear endpapers. Front hinge is tender. Seller's label to the rear pastedown, Pickering Bath. Title leaf has been repaired to the fore-edge. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to the edges.
