Eine Theorie des Bildes hat es insofern auch mit der Aufgabe zu tun, die Geschichte jener durch das Bild gestifteten Situationen zu erforschen.Bruno Haas unterscheidet im Wesentlichen vier Typen ikonischer Situation: den Bildkörper (z.B. Giunta Pisano), das Fenster- (Perugino), das Projektions- (Rubens) und das photographische Bild (Vermeer); sie sind in Europa zwischen dem 13. und dem 17. Jahrhundert nacheinander führend gewesen.
