In den WarenkorbHardcover. 32 x 24cm. Hardcover with slipcase, xx + 146pp. Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with the cover design by Paul Nash, with vellum spine, rear board and lower edge, with panel of goatskin on cover bearing the gilt ornamental motif on the front and the rear, depicting the outline of a burial urn and the titular "Quincunciall" of The Garden of Cyrus. All edges gilt. The inner lip of the front board is gilted "bound by S&S, London". Colophon states "215 copies of this book have been printed on J. Barcham Green's hand-made paper". This is hand-numbered as copy number 176. Near fine condition. Thomas Browne's Hydriotaphia and The Garden of Cyrus were first published in the 1650s under conditions which did not do justice to the text - many errors had crept in. John Carter, the editor of this extraordinary lavish edition, states: "I am able to present for the first time the results of a collation of the six known copies of the first edition which bear corrections in the author's hand". Desmond Flower's publishers' note states that "the printing has been carried out at the Curwen Press: the typography has been in the hands of Oliver Simon and the stencilling of the colours under the supervision of Harold Curwen. The collotypes, which form the basis of the illustrations, were printed by Charles Whittingham and Griggs." The brown outer slipcase has some moisture damage towards the edge of the opening, with some discoloration. The book is in near fine condition.
