(B&W frontispiece portrait + 5 B&W plates) The extended title pretty much tells it all, and an "Editor's Note" details the various versions of his life published by Barnum between 1855 and 1888, summing up thus: "The present volume is a composite reprint of the 1855 'Life' and the various editions of 'Struggles and Triumphs' published from 1869 to 1888. The chief aim has been to present Barnum's own story as he himself first set it down, without regard to the qualms and tremors of respectability which gradually overcame to franker side of his nature. At the same time, the book has been subjected to a vigorous process of condensation, by the omission of many irrelevant or trivial anecdotes, public speeches, letters, laudatory press comments, and other extraneous matter which clutters up the original." Four volumes in total. Both volumes have dates of different editions to front, the latter being 1899 and 1900 Royal Octavo (Limited Edition). There is no evidence that these are limited editions. With illustrated second titles to all volumes. "Ask Mamma" or the Richest Commoner in England is illustrated with thirteen hand-coloured engravings on steel and many woodcuts by John Leech. [counted, all present] Mr. Facey Romford's Hounds is illustrated with twenty-four hand-coloured engravings on steel by John Leech and Hablot K. Browne and with text illustrations by W. T. Maud. [counted, all present] Robert Smith Surtees (1805 - 1864) was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer. John Leech (1817 - 1864) was an English caricaturist and illustrator. In the 1850s he drew the numerous etchings of sporting scenes, contributed, together with woodcuts, to the Handley Cross novels by Robert Smith Surtees. Hablot Knight Browne (1815 - 1882) was an English artist, famous as Phiz, illustrator of books by Charles Dickens, Charles Lever and Harrison Ainsworth. In cloth bindings. Externally, generally smart but with slight wear to extremities, marks and some stains to boards. Internally, bindings slightly strained in places with some pages, especially plates, detached. With 13 illustrations including a folding map, collated and complete. Before detailing the mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibia, and fishes that can be found in northernmost Scotland, the authors describe its geographical position and its important physical features. Ink inscription to the front pastedown reads 'To their Grandson, Hugh Blair, on his coming of age. 13 July 2022. From Robert and Mary Blair, with best wishes.' In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Externally, smart. A little rubbed to the front joint, with some light wear to the extremities.
