FIRST EDITION, finely bound from the original monthly parts. The title page presents the work as edited by "Boz," Dickens's pseudonym. Two volumes, complete. Octavo (8vo). Finely bound by Champs in three-quarter tan morocco over marbled boards, with marbled endpapers and top edges gilt. Preserving 91 leaves of original advertising material, including the front wrapper of Part XV; several advertisement leaves are mounted on thin paper. Illustrated with 43 etched plates, including the frontispiece and vignette title, by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz") and Robert Seymour. The two plates for Part III are the replacement plates by Phiz rather than the suppressed plates by Robert William Buss. Most of the remaining plates are first plates, first issue; plates 17 through 43 are all first issue, including the notably scarce plate 24, "Mr. Pickwick Slides," showing four stakes in the ice; and also the frontis and vignette title. Pickwick Papers was Dickens's first novel, and began as a monthly serial in 1836 and established the young author's reputation. Contents generally clean and unmarked; pencil notes on 2 pages of front blanks in vol. I. Bound without half-title, as issued. Most plates show tanning at the edges and light general age-toning. Binding remains sound and square, and the morocco and marbled boards present attractively. A Very Good+ copy in a fine binding, distinguished by extensive advertising material and numerous first-issue plates.
