Rare first edition of this classic philosophical work. Octodecimo, bound in full leather by J & K custom binding, gilt titles to the spine, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. In near fine condition with light rubbing and toning, some pencil underlining from previous owner, stamp on the second free endpaper. Scarce with only one example appearing at auction in the last 125 years. Sir Thomas Browne (1605â"1682) was an English polymath, physician, and writer known for his rich prose and intellectual curiosity. Christian Morals, published posthumously in 1716, is a reflective and philosophical work that explores ethical and religious themes through a Christian lens. Written as a sequel to his earlier work Religio Medici, it offers moral guidance rooted in Christian doctrine while incorporating Browneâs characteristic blend of scientific observation, classical references, and personal meditation. The text emphasizes virtues such as humility, charity, and piety, advocating for a life of moral integrity and spiritual contemplation.

FIRST EDITION. 142 x 80 mm. (5 5/8 x 3 3/8"). 3 p.l., 331, [3] (ads) pp. Contemporary dark brown calf, smooth spine with possibly later (18th century?) lettering to (original?) backstrip. (Recent small, expert repairs to joints and spine.) Front flyleaf with engraved armorial bookplate of Samuel W. Lambert (see below). Keynes 187; Osler 4531; Wing B-5065; ESTC R16043. Boards a bit dried and abraded, spine with superficial creasing, but the binding sturdy and wholly satisfactory; not infrequent (but light, and never offensive) foxing to text. Internally fresh and clean, and given the expectations for an insubstantial pedestrian binding like this, an excellent copy. This is an appealing copy of a rare and peculiar work on the natural world, from the library of a distinguished American bibliophile. The preface to "Nature's Cabinet" concludes with a quote from "Religio Medici," the best-known work of physician and writer Sir Thomas Browne (1605-82), leading some to conclude that he was the author. Keynes, however, declares, "This scarce and curious work treats of physiology, but it is not in any way worthy of Sir Thomas Browne, with whose name it was falsely associated." One of the great 17th century stylists of English prose and one of the most innovative thinkers of his time, Browne was quick to deny responsibility for this fanciful disquisition, going so far as to print his denial at the end of his 1658 "Hydriotaphia." While it is scientifically and theologically specious, "Nature's Cabinet" is nevertheless surprising and entertaining in its discussion of the nature of bodies, no matter what category they belong to. Sorting nature into inanimate and animate bodies, the text examines the characteristics of stones, gems, and metals, before moving onto plants (to which it assigns souls!), animals, and humans. The final pages address what the writer considers plant-animal hybrids, among them sea stars and sea anemones. As indicated by the ex-libris designed and engraved by noted bookplate artist Edwin Davis French, our copy was once in the library of Dr. Samuel W. Lambert (1859-1942), respected physician, medical educator, and Grolier Club member. As dean and later head of the Columbia University School of Medicine, Lambert was a pioneer in developing alliances between hospitals and medical schools for the training of doctors. Rare books were his respite from career pressures, and his chief activity in retirement. His profile by Columbia University Irving Medical Center Archives and Special Collections notes, "He was responsible for discovering the surviving woodcut blocks for the illustrations of Andreas Vesalius's landmark 'De Humani Corporis Fabrica' (1543) and having them reprinted in 1934 as 'Andreae Vesalii Bruxellensis Icones Anatomicae.'" Whoever wrote "Nature's Cabinet," the work is rare in the marketplace: we could trace only one other copy at auction since 1990.
Plate: 245x157 mm. Margin: 255x167 mm. Some very faint foxing.
