Planche, and others by the Brothers Brough and Charles Selby. The first five volumes present are authored by British dramatist James Robinson Planché, who over half a century wrote, adapted, on collaborated on 176 plays in a wide range of genres.The first work is the very scarce first edition of J. R. Planche's two act 'fairy extravaganza' called 'Fortunio, and His Seven Gifted Servants'.The second work is a very scarce grand comic called 'The Island of Jewels', another of Planche's fairy extravaganzas. This edition was published circa 1849.The third work is an 1850 edition of Planche's very scarce grand comic fairy extravaganza 'King Charming or the Blue Bird of Paradise'.The fourth work is Planche's 'panoramic extravaganza' titled 'Mr. Buckstone's Ascent of Mount Parnassus'. Illustrated with one plate, and published circa 1853.The fifth is 'The Yellow dwarf and the King of the Gold Mines', published in 1854.Authored by playwrights William and Robert Brough is the very scarce 1848 drama 'The Enchanted Isle or, "Raising the Wind" on the Most Approved Principles'. Published in 1848, and illustrated with one plate.The penultimate work is Robert B. Brough's 'fish tale' 'Masaniello; or, the Fish'oman of Naples', published in 1857.The final work comedian Charles Selby's play 'Taming a Tartar; or, Magic & Mazourkaphobia'. Published in 1846, and illustrated with one plate.Pasted to the rear pastedown and endpaper is a 1909 newspaper obituary of actor Lionel Brough.An index to the works is handwritten to the front pastedown, and indicates that two plays have been removed. In a cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with fading to back strip. Inscription to front pastedown, and newspaper clippings pasted to rear free endpaper and pastedown. Front free endpaper removed. Internally, text block separated prior to the start of 'Masaniello', indicating the location where two plays have been removed. Pages lightly age toned, but generally clean. Ink numbers to each title page. Head of 'Fortunio' title page removed. Good Only. book.
