Tirage argentique de l'époque portant un envoi autographe signé de Gabriele D'Annunzio à Romaine BROOKS sur le montage « A Romaine l'Ailé borgne Gabriele (1916) ». Romaine Brooks rencontra Gabriele D'Annunzio en 1909 et ils eurent une relation passionnée trente ans durant jusqu'à la mort du poète en 1938. D'Annunzio, dès le début de la première guerre mondiale, est engagé volontaire dans l'aviation, et il perdra un oeil dans un accident de vol en 1916. C'est à Venise, où elle louait un atelier, dans le Zattere, qu'elle peindra le portrait du Commandante avec son hydravion en arrière-fond. Le tableau resté la propriété de son modèle est conservé avec les lettres de Romaine et d'autres reliques au Vittoriale, son ancienne résidence sur les bords du lac de Garde. Romaine n'utilisait pas la photographie comme simple témoignage mais comme outil au service de son art, tout autant que comme un art à part entière. Ce dernier pratiquait alors la photographie et était très proche du mouvement culturel afro-américain dit de la Renaissance de Harlem. Il sera l'exécuteur testamentaire de Gertrude Stein. Romaine peindra son portrait en 1936.…
