Princeton, N.J., American School of Classical Studies at Athens, 1971. XIV,188 pp. 147 b./w. figs on unnumbered plts, [4] plts with col. ills & 38 b./w. plts. Orig. hardcover (gray cloth). 4to. (Isthmia. Excavations by the University of Chicago under the auspices of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Vol. I).A fundamental scientific work within classical archaeology. The book is a detailed architectural and historical study of the Sanctuary and Temple of Poseidon in Isthmia (near the Corinthian Isthmus in Greece). Because very little physically remains of the original temples at the Isthmia site, Broneer performed painstaking work (archaeological 'detective work') to reconstruct everything. In this work, it provides a crystal-clear picture of how an important Greek sanctuary developed over the centuries, and how people in antiquity thought about religion and temple building. The book is a detailed architectural and historical study of the Sanctuary and Temple of Poseidon in Isthmia (near the Corinthian Isthmus in Greece). - Broneer investigated two temples built on the same foundations: an archaic temple around 700 BC and a later classical successor from the 5th century BC. The book contains accurate reconstructions of, among other things, the roof of the archaic temple. Specific elements are discussed in depth, such as the perirrhanterion (a stone washbasin for rituals), traces of color on ancient architectural fragments, and the units of measurement (foot measurements) used by the builders. - Text in Englihs.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - After a discussion of the fragmentary evidence for several buildings of the Greek period which were swept to construct it, the South Stoa at Corinth is treated in detail. Careful description of all the remains, both those in situ and reused blocks, forms the basis of the reconstruction of this extensive two-story building of the third quarter of the 4th century B.C. which stretched the full length of the south side of the Corinthian Agora and, more than any other single building, established the size and shape of the center of the Hellenistic and Roman city. One of the largest secular buildings in Greece, the South Stoa appears to have been planned as a kind of hotel to accommodate visitors at a time when Corinth served as the capital of a briefly united Greek world. After the destruction of the city, it remained comparatively undamaged and was taken over by the Roman Colony as the seat of its administrative offices. In its final phase various buildings, including a bouleuterion, a fountain house, a bathing establishment, and a public latrine were built into the ground floor.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Oscar Broneer¿s excavations at the sanctuary at Isthmia between 1952 and 1960 revealed much about an important center of Greek civilization. This volume particularly provides the fullest possible picture of the temenos of Poseidon in Greek and Roman times, including the closely related stadia and the sanctuary of Palaimon and several monuments excavated to the west of the sanctuary: the Sacred Glen, the West Foundation, and the Hippodrome. The Temple of Poseidon itself is discussed in detail in Isthmia I. There is a wealth of information here including some particularly interesting discussion of the starting mechanism of the earlier stadium, the religious significance of two ¿cult caves¿ and the underground passage beneath the Temple of Palaimon.…
