One central theme is the persistent shadow of the ancient cityin crumbling ancient buildings, and the survival of Roman styles of urban lay-out; and in the way that cities were depicted both visually (in iconography that changed only very slowly, if at all), and verbally (in the persistence of often outmoded classical terms and descriptions). Yet the ideal of the city was also changing and developing, especially around the idea of a new, specifically Christian city, protected by its saints and by its churches. - Gian Pietro Brogiolo teaches Medieval Archaeology at the University of Padua. His interests are in the towns and countryside of early medieval Italy, and he has excavated extensively in Lombardy, particularly at Brescia and Monte Barro. El Corpus Architecturae Religiosae Europeae pretende inventariar todos los monumentos arquitectónicos religiosos construidos entre el siglo IV y finales del siglo X (hasta 1030-40) que aún reflejan la morfología de la Alta Edad Media (El Tercer Renacimiento Carolingio). El proyecto se elaboró en reuniones, seminarios y coloquios organizados entre 2002 y 2007, a través de discusiones sobre objetivos, temas de investigación, fichas de catálogo (tanto impresas como digitalizadas), terminología comparada y determinantes del área, por mencionar solo algunos. La tarjeta para las entradas de catálogo impresas fue desarrollada por colegas italianos con una contribución considerable de expertos franceses, croatas y españoles.
