Contents clean, same neat gift inscriptions to each volume dated 14th November 1918, endpapers with offset toning as usual, covers carefully handled. Hinges of Pride and Prejudice very weak, nearly detached. A delightful set in very good condition. Following the first colour-illustrated production of Austen's works by C.E. and H.W. Brock in 1898, this edition features significantly more illustrations, expanded and revised by Charles Brock alone. This collection was given by Roland L'Estrange Bryce to Miss Bessie Allan, three days after the Armistice, thanking her for her service during the final years of the war. Bryce (1889-1953), the son of Liberal MP Annan Bryce, worked at the Foreign Office. His sisters Marjery and Rosalind were prominent Suffragettes.
