In 1823 the author, another missionary (Mr. Hodgson) and their families set up a mission in Maquassi in Bechuanaland under much difficulty due to a constant state of warfare in the country. The Rev. Broadbent studied the people and even mastered the language enough to be able to preach to them. The green boards are worn, scuffed, mildly bubbled from storage, marked by handling and storage. Nonetheless, the boards are steady and comfortable. Within, the frontispage has an inscription from the Foreign Missionary Committee of the John Street, Wesleyan Church in Glasgow (not only was the missionary movement utterly dependent on the Scottish Wesleyan churches, the John Street church was most important in the organisation of the 'movement'). The contents are contents are a little aged. They have user wear and marks from use and storage, some few age-related foxing spots. Contains 137 tipped-in platinum print photographs measuring 3" x 2 ¼" to 6 ¼" x 9" including 94 portraits of the smaller size. Good only with detached front board, lacking the spine, a few leaves detached or nearly so, offsetting opposite each page with photos, with photos generally near fine or better, a few slightly rippled or faded, one loose. The 1905 yearbook of one of the country's most prestigious woman's colleges incorporates original platinum prints to document the sporting, literary, and theatrical life of the campus. In addition to photos of buildings and the grounds, there are group and action photos of the basketball and field hockey teams as well as crowds viewing the matches. There's a photo of a group of women working out in the gym. There are also many photos related to the plays performed in the 1904-5 school year including a production of Uncle Tom's Cabin, women dressed as Native Americans, and many of images showing the women dressed as men. The photos have a back stamp of Broadbent Co., a Philadelphia photography firm founded in 1850 by Samuel Broadbent. Broadbent was a miniature portraitist whose work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was one of the first daguerreotypists in America, learning the process from Samuel F.B. Morse (who learned the technique directly from Daguerre) in 1840 and 1841. Broadbent died in 1880, but his sons kept the business going into 1905, making these photos some of the last they produced. An interesting take on the college yearbook, painstakingly created with photographic prints of exceptional tonal range made by a firm founded by one of the United States' earliest professional photographers.…
