Philip James Bailey (18161902) was an English poet, best known as the author of 'Festus', a voluminous poem strongly influenced by Goethe's 'Faust'. It was first published in 1839 and ran into numerous expanded editions over the rest of the 19th century: the 'Jubilee' edition, from which these extracts were selected, numbered 794 pages. This miniature edition of extracts chosen by the publisher Albert Broadbent was 'issued solely with the object of making Mr Philip J Bailey's great masterpiece more widely known, and also to bring to the author that increased recognition which his genius demands.' Miniature (15 x 8 cm) softback in fair condition. Paper cover over thin card grubby and torn round edges. Stitched binding intact. Text (44pp inc. referenced index to 'Jubilee' edition) discoloured round cut page edges, internally good.

The private letters of writer and Bloomsbury Group memberLytton Stracheyreveal that Senhouse was his (last) lover, and with whom in the late "20s and early 1930s he had asado-masochisticsexual relationship. In the publisher's quarter paper vellum, with decorative paper covered boards.Externally, very smart, with slight yellowing to the paper vellum and rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Small ownership bookplate of one Richard Luckett to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with minor spotting to the endpapers. Very Good. book.
