He is pleased that her 'footsteps are treading in high places', and hopes that this 'leads to as much golden reward as it seems to suggest'. He will see her friend 'Mr. Kennerley', but he cannot be 'encouraging' as he is not at present 'casting any picture', and will not be doing so for 'a month or so'. His 'activities now never seem to bring [him] to Hampstead', he hopes she will see him when she visits his 'neighbourhood'.

In den WarenkorbFrom the Macqueen-Pope papers. (See his entry in the Oxford DNB.) Both items in fair condition, lightly aged and creased. Pinned together. ONE: DM to MP. Signed 'Mollie and Donovan Maule. / (Mollie Shiells)', but the husband is clearly the author. 1p, 4to. Folded twice for postage. He thanks him for his 'inspiring book' on the Haymarket Theatre. 'My wife and I (both ex-Haymarket artists) feel inseminated ith fresh optimism and jope while battling with the municipal authorities and Kenya Government to establish the first professional theatre ever known here. To read of the early struggles and ultimate triumphs of many of The Little Theatre in the Hay's determined pioneers - people like the two Colmans, Webster, and Buckstone - has lifted our hearts and spurred us to fresh endeavour. A copy of this book shall be our daughter Annabel's Christmas-present this year.' He asks him to make a reference to the play 'Havoc' in future editions ('& it deserves to run into several'): 'I noticed its unintentional omission particularly because it was in that play that I made my first appearance at the Haymarket, where incidentally my wife beat me to it with "The Blue Bird" in 1910.' He ends with renewed thanks for 'a fine book'. TWO: MP to DM. 1p, 4to. Although the book has 'received a magnificent press it has done the least well of all my books, which I attribute to the fact that people today, if slightly interested in the Theatre as a whole have little interest in individual theatres - unless it is Drury Lane, for my history of that is a best seller. The next i[s] "Gaiety" - due next month, so we shall see. But "Carriages at Eleven" and "Twenty Shillings in the Pound" have sold like smoke.' He will take up DM's request with the publishers.

Zustand: Fine. - A few words typed on a 8-3/4 inch high by 7-3/8 inch wide sheet of his personalized letterhead with his bold signature printed in black at the top. Signed "John". Folded twice for mailing. Fine. Houseman acknowledges Jean Dalrymple's note to him about Dennis Hedlund and writes that he will await his call.John Houseman [1902-1988] was a British American actor and producer who became known for his highly publicized collaboration with Orson Welles from their days in the Federal Theatre Project through the production of "Citizen Kane". As the producer of "The Blue Dahlia" he also collaborated with Raymond Chandler who wrote the screenplay for that film. As an actor, he is probably best known for his role in "The Paper Chase" for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Houseman became the founding director of the Drama Division at The Juilliard School, and held this position from 1968 until 1976. Unwilling to see Juillard's very first class disbanded upon graduation, Houseman and his Juilliard colleague Margot Harley formed them into an independent, touring repertory company they named the "Group 1 Acting Company" [later renamed The Acting Company].Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Cary Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jose Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member, producer, and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.

In den WarenkorbSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 4to. In good condition, lightly aged and creased. Folded twice for postage. The letterhead is somewhat striking, with a band of green printed along the top, and the charity's logo featuring prominently. The names of many officers and committe members are printed down the left-hand margin, headed by President Noel Coward, and including 'Miss Gladys Cooper', 'Dame Edith Evans', 'Lady Du Maurier', 'Sir Laurence Olivier', 'Mr. Michael Redgrave', 'Mr. Jack Hawkins' and 'Mr. Kenneth More'. Attenborough features both as Hon. Treasurer and the first-listed member of the 'Executive Committee for 1955/56'. The letter features a nice example of Attenborough's tangled signature. He thanks the Allchilds for their 'great generosity to our Fund in donating this wonderful cheque', explaining that the Fund is 'greatly dependent upon kindnesses such as yours in order to be able to support these children who have no homes of their own'. He is sure that 'Mr. Henson' (the comedian Leslie Henson, one of the Vice-Presidents) will have already thanked them, 'but this letter comes at the special request of the Executive Committee to tell you just how deeply appreciative we are'. The names of the crew are given on the first covering page, and the cast of characters (but not the names of the actors playing them) on the second. An interesting artefact, indicative of the continuing reassessment and reinterpretation of the works of one of Britain's great writers. While its production values met with some praise, Wadey's adaptation was not particularly well received, the introduction of 'Gothic novel fantasies' meeting with particular criticism. Katharine Schlesinger played Catherine Morland; Peter Firth, Henry Tilney; Robert Hardy, General Tilney; Googie Withers, Mrs. Allen; and Geoffrey Chater, Mr. Allen.
