French jurist and politician Barnabé Brisson's (1531-1591; latinised as Brissonius) public career included holding various positions by appointment of Charles IX and Henry III, among them the sixth president of Parlement. When the Seize took over Paris in 1589, Brisson was sufficiently diplomatic for them to also appoint him first president of the new Parlament, but before long he lost their trust and was executed in 1591. James Fowler Kellas Johnstone (1846-1928) was a specialist in bibliographies of Aberdeen and North East Scotland, and the author, with A.W. Robertson, of 'Bibliotheca Aberdonensis' (1928). J.L. Weir was probably the Scottish historian, author of 'Excerpta Scotica' (1939). Willems, 1615.

Contemporary blindstamped vellum. I: An uncommon edition. The book was first published by Prevosteau in Paris in 1590 from the author's notes ("ex a…dversariis"). Essentially the sources drawn on are purely those of ancient writers, both Greek and Latin, from whom there is extensive quotation. Book I is concerned with the Persian rulers and their history, book II with religious and social life, and book III with military organisation and prowess, both ancient and modern. Brisson (1531-91) was a distinguished jurist and author of important works, notably the legal code of Henri III, but no traveller. He was hanged by the "Ligueurs" on 15 Nov. 1591. The "Typographus lectori" makes it very clear how difficult were the circumstances in which Brisson found himself, the very walls of the city being shaken by bombardment, and the shadow of death being seen everywhere, and the very opening paragraph of the text, in which Brisson speaks of "Regii nominis decus, imperii maiestatem, totumque regni statum", has contemporary resonance. Friedrich Sylburg, who acted as editor and proof-reader for the Commelin atelier, has added just a few notes at the end, the preface to these claiming that the original Paris edition of 1590 had been full of errors of transcription and editing. - II: Bound with this is the first edition of Sylburg's "Saracenica", a "theological compilation with many magical deliberations" (cf. Göllner 1878) providing a German Protestant apology against Islam based on works of the Oriental church. Contains extracts from the Panoplia of Zigabenus, a treatise against the "false prophet" Muhammad, the catechism for Saracene converts to Christianity, as well as extracts from Eutychius, Theophanes and Anastasius, printed in Greek and Latin parallel text. The "1591" edition cited by Göllner 1878 (a single supposed copy in Braunschweig) is a ghost, based on a misreading of the indistinct final digit of the imprint. - Binding stained; interior somewhat browned as common due to paper. Karl IX . ernannte ihn 1573 zum Generalanwalt des Parlaments . Sein Nachfolger Heinrich III . setzte besonderes Vertrauen in Brisson, der 1573 zum erst…en Fiskalbeamten ernannt, 1580 zum Président à mortier befördert, 1588 zum sechsten Präsidenten des Parlaments ernannt und ihm anvertraut wurde mit mehreren diplomatischen Vertretungen. Als die französischen Religionskriege erneut aufflammten, blieb Brisson in Paris, nachdem die royalistischen Richter des Parlaments am 16. Januar 1589 aus der Stadt geflohen waren, gefolgt vom König, der am 13. Mai 1588 geflohen war "), eine Gruppe von Honoratioren der Liga , die jetzt Paris regierte, setzte Brisson als Ersatz für Achille de Harlay als Ersten Präsidenten des Parlaments ein . Als Politiker versuchte Brisson, zwischen den Kriegsparteien zu vermitteln. Die Seize begannen jedoch bald, ihm zu misstrauen, weil sie ihn als loyal gegenüber Henry betrachteten. Folglich ließen sie ihn von einem Sondergericht zum Tode verurteilen und 1591 durch den Strang hinrichten .- Etwas gebräunt, ansonsten gut erhaltenes Exemplar. Reliure de l'époque en plein parchemin à rabat. Dos lisse, portant les titres et les dates à l'encre brune. Tranches rouges. Rares défauts à la reliure. Papier propre. Très bel exemplaire. Le Pausanias est une nouvelle édition de la traduction latine de Romulus Amasaeus (1ère éd. à Bale en 1557) établie sur la base du texte grec par Friedrich Sylburg et augmentée de nombreuses notes et index. Les trois livres sur le gouverments royal des Perses, par Barnabé Brisson (1531-1591), (1ère éd. 1590, chez Étienne Prevosteau à Paris), sont augmentés des notes de Sylburg. Ce dernier résida de 1583 à 1591 à Francfort où il eut l'occasion de reprendre les travaux du professeur Guilielmus Xylander sur Pausanias. Barnabé Brisson fût un avocat de renom sous Henri III, qui l'employa à plusieurs reprises et le tenait en haute estime. Il resta à Paris lors de la huitième guerre de religion (1585-1598) où il fût nommé premier président du Parlement. Mais ses rapports avec le duc de Mayenne lui valurent d'être pendu en 1591 par les ligueurs.

Brisson was a renowned French jurist and philologist. Widely respected, he was appointed president of the Parliament of Paris in 1588. In 1591, however, he was hanged by The Sixteen, a group of insurgents who captured Paris in a bizarre coup. First published in 1559, Brisson's Verborum was the standard legal dictionary of its day and remained an authoritative source for hundreds of years. Its final edition was published in 1793, followed by a supplement volume in 1813.
