John Colborne (18301890) saw heavy service during the Crimean War, achieving the rank of Colonel and served in the Egyptian Army later in his career. Major-General Frederic Brine, R.E. (18291890) served as a volunteer in the Crimean campaign, participating in the Siege of Sebastopol and the Battle of the Tchernaya. He later served aboard the flagship Euryalus during naval engagements off Japan (1863), was mentioned in despatches for his services in China, and worked in India's Public Works Department. He retired from the Army with the honorary rank of Major-General in 1884. Following his retirement, he made headlines for an adventurous, albeit unsuccessful, attempt to cross the English Channel to France in a balloon, after which he had to be rescued from the water!
