No Flaws or Blemishes but minimal shelf handling; Still Gift Quality. The bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even age-toning. Unread. Four hundred y…ears ago, the Empire encompassed 11,000 inhabited worlds. It was the center of a thriving trade economy. Then, almost overnight, the Empire collapsed, leaving the remaining planets virtually isolated from one another. Mass decides to search for the Empire with his diverse companions, who have also evolved to withstand the environments of the vastly different worlds they inhabit. Mass comes from a harsh world named Streinveldt, where the gravity is 2.5 times that of Earth and only genetically engineered people can reside. Mass is humanoid, genetically evolved to cope with greater pressures, stronger gravity, and heavier densities than those of an ancient planet he never knew, nor probably ever would. To live, they must find a way to come together, as they're faced with intense pressure, clashing perspectives, and unfamiliar circumstances. Cover Art by Ralph Brillhart. (illustrator).

In den WarenkorbMass market paperback. Zustand: Fair. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 124, [4] pages. Some page browning noted. Back cover corner gone. This is the author's first full length novel. Christopher Anvil was a pseudonym used by author Harry C. Crosby. He began publishing science fiction with the story "Cinderella, Inc." in t…he December 1952 issue of the science fiction magazine Imagination. By 1956, he had adopted his pseudonym and was being published in Astounding Magazine. Anvil's repeated appearances in Astounding/Analog were due in part to his ability to write to one of Campbell's preferred plots: alien opponents with superior firepower losing out to the superior intelligence or indomitable will of humans. A second factor is his stories are nearly always humorous throughout. Another was his characterization and manner of story crafting, where his protagonists slid from disaster to disaster with the best of intentions, and through exercise of fast thinking, managed to snatch victory somehow from the jaws of defeat. The day the machines stopped began in an ordinary way. There was little warning of the impending disaster. Suddenly, all electrical energy was destroyed on the earth. Planes, cars, rockets, machinery of all kinds became useless. By week's end, total chaos enveloped the world as the wheels of civilization ground to a halt. Then ruthless leaders began to emerge, seeking a way to gain control of the almost helpless population. Only a handful of scientists remained to fight the inexplicable phenomenon--until they were captured and forced to use their knowledge to help the ruthless power combine take the world back to the Dark Ages. From a discussion/review found online: The novel begins with two laboratory workers, Brian and Carl, fighting over the same girl in an office love triangle. A newscast on the radio in the background is discussing an ambitious cryogenics project happening in Afghanistan conducted by Soviet scientists. A defector among the scientists is warning the media that these experiments could cause a worldwide failure of all electrical products. And then poof! The lights go out at the lab. Brian and Carl are dispatched by their boss to see how far the outage stretches and return with a full report of that the men find. In 1964, losing access to your transistor radio was like an internet outage today. Once outside, Brian and Carl see the extent of the outage. As the book's cover betrays, everything is out of order cars, clocks, flashlights, phones all dead. The laws of nature surely have changed. Human hysteria and lawlessness follow. Ralph Brillhart (1924-2007). American artist. Although virtually nothing is known about this artist, there is a 2007 obituary for a Ralph Winton Brillhart of Great Neck, Long Island, identifying the man as a former Marine and "commercial illustrator", and one can reasonably assume that he was the Ralph Brillhart who painted a number of sf book covers for New York publishers during the 1960s and early 1980s.
