The book focuses on Attic black-figure drinking cups (pottery from ancient Athens produced in the black-figure style), with particular attention to early types such as Komast cups and Siana cups. These cups were used during Greek drinking parties (symposia) in the Archaic period (especially the 6th century BC). Brijder developed a highly detailed system for classifying these cups. Based on their shape, painting style, and stylistic evolution, he was able to accurately date the vases and attribute them to specific potters and painters. Numerous cups have been attributed to specific masters and their workshops (such as the Heidelberg Painter, the C Painter, etc.). The publication examines the imagery on the cups in depth-including dancing revelers (the komos, a ritualistic drunken procession performed by revelers in ancient Greece, whose participants were known as komasts), mythological scenes, animals, and battle scenes-and explores what these images reveal about Greek culture and daily life.
