Erstausgabe
Paperback. Small 8vo. Stiff glazed pictorial wrappers. 258pp. Very good. Slightest bit of edgewear to wrappers. Tight and handsome first edition of this World War Two-related fiction -- "the story of the sailing of a big French army transport from Syria bound for Marseille on June 9, 1940, the day before Mussolini declared war." The "wrappers" actually appear to be the dust jacket from the hardbound edition affixed to blank stiff wrappers, with front and rear inner text flaps affixed to inside front and rear wrappers -- this, plus a stiff 3¼" X 5½" printed "Bookmark for 'Last Boat from Beyrouth'" promo card laid in soliciting comments, suggest this may have been an oddball type of advance or review copy.

The result is that the husky reformer comes into dangerous personal contact with criminal factions, is plunged into the midst of bootleg wwars, of bombings, of general violence.and at last, troubled by both family and public affairs, falls into the very web of corruption that he had set himself to destroy.".
