As photographed, in perfect condition with no signs of use; xii + 191pp; of which pp. 39-134 are Wilson's illustrations, presenting more than 300 individual drawings and coloured paintings, followed by notes on each illustrations and relevant extracts from Wilson's journals. Edward Wilson was a member of both of Scott's Antarctic expeditions, acting as medical officer and zoologist, and, on the 2nd expedition, chief scientist. His very detailed illustrations presented here are the first ever sketched of the vast majority of these birds. "Dr Roberts, himself a leading authority on the birds of the south polar regions, has edited and arranged this volume from the standpoint of one who has an intimate first-hand experience of the Antarctic. In the introduction Dr Roberts provides a short memoir of Wilson, together with an assessment of his abilities and motives as an ornithologist and artist, and an account of his methods".
