Towns and Industries - The Danish Boroughs, Black Country, Pottery Towns, Salt Towns. Chapter III. North Midland Countryside - High Peak to Sherwood, From Mersey to the Trent, Lowland and Wold. Index. ***'North Midland Country covers the five counties, of Cheshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire. It deals with the famous men and women who have lived in them, including Lord Byron, Samuel Johnson, George Eliot, Izaak Walton and D. H. Lawrence; with the historic country houses such as Kedleston Hall, Chatsworth, Bolsover Castle and Hardwick Hall; with Chester, Lichfield, Derby, Chesterfield, Ashbourne and all the other historic old towns; and with the landscape itself, the people who live in it, and the delectable byways of local history, archaeology and folklore. From all these points of view the author shows that his chosen district is one of the most richly endowed in England. The volume is no less lavishly illustrated than its predecessors in the "Face of Britain" Series. There is a colour frontispiece, a variety of drawings in the text, endpaper maps, and more than 100 other photographs, engravings and old prints. Text and pictures together should win many new friends for a part of England which is less visited or appreciated than its riches, both of landscape and architecture, deserve.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***First impression of the true first edition, now quite hard to find in its original 1948 dustwrapper. One of the wonderfully produced Batsford books, with the beautifully designed wraparound dustwrapper by Brian Cook. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

York in the Eighteenth Century, VIII. York in the Nineteenth Century and To-day, Index. ***'Ever since the time of the Romans York has remained one of the most important cities in Britain. As a Capital and as an ecclesiastical centre the City has had a long and varied history whose richness has at every period been reflected in the quality and profusion of its buildings. In this book, John Rodgers, author, administrator and Member of Parliament, who was born and bred in and around York, has written a lively introduction to its history and architecture. Like the other books in the same series "York" is magnificently illustrated. There is a map of the town, a plan of the Minster, and a collection of more than 50 photographs and prints of York's matchless streets and buildings. It is the hope of the author and of his publishers that the book will appeal particularly to visitors, and that the citizens of York also may find in it a not unworthy record of their city."
