La Montagne Noire se présente à nous sous l'aspect d'une longue bande de hauts reliefs en roches dures, alignés d'Ouest en Est, dominant au Nord le bassin de Châteaulin et au Sud le plateau cornouaillais et la cuvette de Langonnet. Si on l'envisage dans sa totalité, elle s'étend du Ménez-Hom aux landes de Gloinel ; c'est-à-dire sur une soixantaine de kilomètres. En fait, le Ménez-Hom, dôme de grès massif, peu raviné, s'isole du reste de la chaîne ; la Montagne Noire ne forme une véritable unité physique que de Briec à Glomel, encore que cette unité ne soit pas parfaite et que l'on peut aisément y discerner trois régions : La Montagne Noire occidentale de Briec à Laz où le relief se morcelle, ne présente certes pas la belle ordonnance classique de la partie centrale ; cette dernière, de Laz au signal de Ty Coz (303 mètres) est celle qui offre la plus grande régularité dans la disposition longitudinale des bandes rocheuses. La partie orientale, de Gourin à Glomel, s'enlève nettement au-dessus des pays environnants et quoiqu'elle ne porte pas le sommet le plus élevé, elle présente un aspect plus rude, avec le dôme du Mont Noir (304 mètres) qui, sans grande vigueur, se détache toutefois sur un moutonnement de collines disposées d'une façon assez désordonnée.
