Zustand: guter Zustand. Radierung, 1865, auf chamoisfarbenem Bütten. 19,9:12,8 cm. - Papier leicht vergilbt. Provenienz: Sammlung Alfred Beurdeley (1847-1919), Paris, Lugt 421; Sammlung Nicolaas Sax (1899-1977), Amsterdam, Lugt 1989a, diese mit einem Schwerpunkt auf Bresdins Arbeiten. Literatur: Van Gelder 93, II (von II); Préaud 65, II (von II). Sehr guter Abdruck mit vollem Rand. Bresdin kam aus einer bäuerlichen Familie und bildete sich autodidaktisch bereits als 17jähriger in Paris durch Kopieren älterer Stiche, vor allem von Albrecht Dürer und Rembrandt von Rijn. So erwarb er sich die Voraussetzungen für seine Radierungen und Federlithographien. Er hatte Kontakt zu literarischen Kreisen, war befreundet mit Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867) und Victor Hugo (1802-1885). Er war Modell für einige Charaktere in diversen Erzählungen. Sein Spitzname war Chien-Caillou", eine französische Verbalhornung des indianischen Namens Chingachgook" eine Figur aus Der letzte Mohikaner" (Roman von James Fenimore Cooper, 1789-1851). Er verließ Paris nach der Revolution von 1848/49, ging nach Tulle und lebte ab 1853 in einer Höhle in der Nähe von Toulouse. Baudelaire machte ihn 1861 mit Théophile Gautier (1811-1872) bekannt, der ihn beauftragte für Revue fantaisiste" Illustrationen zu schaffen. Daraus entstand später eine regelmäßige Tätigkeit. 1863 lernte Bresdin den gut 15 Jahre jüngeren Odilon Redon (1840-1916) in Bordeaux kennen, der ihn als seinen Vorläufer" betrachtete und war in den Jahren 1864-1866 dessen freundschaftlicher Mentor. Er gewann 1871 eine Ausschreibung für die Gestaltung kanadischer Geldscheine und siedelte nach Kanada über. Völlig verarmt kehrte er mit Hilfe Victor Hugo's mit Frau und sechs Kindern nach Frankreich zurück, fand dort zu Lebzeiten aber niemals Anerkennung.
