The original issues, numbering 22 in all, appeared between 6 January and 2 June 1718: they are all collected here, and there was no second volume. Pe…rhaps at the time this book was issued (no earlier than the winter of 1718-19, one would think), there was some talk of it being revived, but nothing came of it. Thomas Brereton (1690/91-1722) came from Cheshire and was educated at Oxford, where he had some ambitions to be a poet. On coming down, however, he seems to have conceived of himself as a commentator on literature and society, and began this periodical, which he kept up for less than six months. Brereton's intelligence was lively, but his personality very mercurial: although he received a large inheritance from his father, he quickly ran through it and separated from this wife, who retired to Wales. She was Jane Brereton (née Hughes), herself a poet, who became a friend and correspondent of Elizabeth Carter. Brereton himself died of drowning, trying to evade arrest for libel, in early 1722. Brereton's periodical encompasses many literary topics, and prints substantial extracts from contemporary poetry. Among his subjects are Congreve, Fenton, Garth and Addison, and he has some interesting comments on Pope's Rape of the Lock (pp. 167-8). He also has some harsh comments on those who do not come up to standard: Thomas Purney's Pastorals (1717), for instance, receive a roasting on pp. 195-6: 'As for the Pastoralist, He ought to be assur'd, We are not such Cockneys in Town, as to believe that grown Men and Maids talk like Babys in the Country: We make some Distinction between Simplicity and Importance; though he seems to think light of the Matter.'. The individual numbers of this periodical are, of course, extremely rare. The ESTC records are confusing on this point, as they appear to mix up this 12mo edition with the original issues, but seem to record four sets only (Bodleian, Trinity College Hartford, Texas A & M, and Illinois), plus a few libraries with just a single number. This collected edition is also very scarce, with copies at the British Library, two in Oxford, and in the US at Chicago, Colorado and Texas. See Crane & Kaye 157 for the original folio issue.
