In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fair. 2nd Edition. Second edition in the original printed wraps 15x23cm. 149, (1)pp with several captioned b/w photos, complete with 2 folding maps. This copy came from a French military library (Bibliotheque de la Garnison) with stamps to the title especially, one of which "annule" or cancelled. Otherwise, covers good only, marked and scuffed with a little loss, with a faded stamp, and label to the spine. Interiors mostly very good with light creasing. Maps neatly folded with creasing. Bremond's notes for army officers published in 2 editions, 1922 and 1924, coincided with the creation of France's Mandate for Syria and Lebanon, and a major Berber uprising in its Morocco Protectorate (1921-26). He advises officers on preparations for departure, the sea voyage, arrival, families etc, then at greater length on the situation on the ground, joining one's post, dealing with native troops and peoples, religious and ethnographic notes (much on Islam, Mecca, and recent events), and living arrangements. A note on behalf of the Ministry of War suggests these notes originally featured in the Revue d'Infanterie. The maps are of Morocco (Maroc), and the area bounded by the Levantine coast, southern Turkey, Baghdad, and northern Transjordan. The photos show Damascus, Aleppo, Jerusalem, Baalbek, Sidon, Mecca, Jeddah, etc. Institutionally rare with 3 copies of the 2nd edition traced (BnF, NYPL, SUNY), and 2 of the first (BnF, HCL).…

Second edition in contemporary looking half brown calf rebinding with marbled paper covered boards 15x23cm. 149, (1) pp with several captioned b/w photos, complete with 2 folding maps. Covers good only, extensively scuffed to the leather with loss at the corners, and ghosting to the spine suggesting the loss of a title label. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Contemporary gilt-titled quarter red cloth rebinding with black and red marbled paper covered boards 12x18cm. 94pp. Ex-Reunion des Officiers de Rennes copy with its ink stamp to the half-title, title and p37, and label remnants to the front pastedown and half-title. Covers otherwise very good, interiors near fine, lightly tanned. This opens with a letter of praise from Paul Huvelin to Bremond. Huvelin had co-founded the Law School at Beirut's Universite Saint-Joseph in 1913, and in 1919 led a mission to Syria to assess the growing threats to French interests in the region. He died shortly before publication, and this includes a tribute to him. This presents Bremond's lectures at the Centre for Advanced Military Studies drawing on over 30 years of experience in Africa, Madagascar, Arabia and the Levant. In his opening statement he surveys the French colonies with their populations numbering 22 million Muslims, noting the possibility of a resurgent German threat. In 4 sections he covers the origins of Islam (I); Syrian Islam under the Umayyads and Abbasids (II); Turco-Mongol Islam (III); and current issues pertinent to France in North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the East (IV). He concludes by stating Islam deserves the same respect and freedoms accorded to other religions, but no more than that. He considers Pan-Islamism as an irreconcilable enemy invented by the Russians and exploited by the Germans. And Muslim affairs need to remain a key focus given setbacks in the Levant, which he likens as temporary of the kind Britain experienced in India and Egypt. …

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Bremond's first hand account of the Arab Revolt, and France's contribution to its success. Original blue and white printed wraps 15x23cm. Printed by Imprimerie Floch, Mayenne, on 3 November 1931. 351pp complete with 5 double-page b/w maps, and Preface by General Louis Franchet d'Esperey. Covers near fine, lightly rubbed with short closed tears along the edges. interiors near fine, lightly tanned. In 1929, Payot published the French translation of Lawrence's "Revolt in the Desert" (1927). Appearing during the Mandate period with ongoing Anglo-French rivalry and distrust, Bremond was prompted to write his own account feeling that Lawrence had omitted France's role. Bremond had been sent to head the French Military Mission in support of the Arab Revolt in July 1916. This was in response to concerns about the impact of the Revolt on Muslim populations in French colonies. The Mission, consisting of French and North African personnel, established close relations with Emirs Ali, Abdullah and Faisal, embedding themselves in their forces, and fought alongside the British. They were effective in leading or supporting Bedouin raids, destroying sections of the Hejaz Railway, and keeping Fakhri Pasha's garrison pinned down in Mecca and Medina. Among them were Captain Muhammad Ould Ali Raho from an elite Algerian Spahi unit, Lieutenant Sid Mohamed Lalhou formerly of the Sultan of Morocco's bodyguard, and Captain Rosario Pisani who joined at Bremond's request working alongside Lawrence and Nuri Said. With a view to negotiating the post-war arrangement, the French replaced Bremond with Major Edouard Cousse in 1917 in response to British pressure. D'Esperey had recently served as Inspector General of France's North African troops. In his Foreword, he echoes Bremond's perceptions, underlines his suitability for the role based on his knowledge of Islam and experience in North Africa, and suggests that Mecca is as important now as Rome was, and Moscow will become (pp7-8). Chapters include background on Arabia, the pre-War period, declaration of war, the Hajj of 1916, French operations, and events during 1916-20. Maps include a general map of Arabia, theatres of operation, Medina to the Red Sea, Aqaba to the Dead Sea, and the Dead Sea to Damascus.…

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, decidedly uncommon in commerce, just one copy traced at auction. Brémond was head of the French military mission to the Hejaz, sent by the French government to assert its presence in the region, working alongside Lawrence in fostering the Arab Revolt. His account is a useful corrective to anglophone Lawrentian bias. Brémond (1868-1948) was a very different character to Lawrence, a graduate of Saint-Cyr and École supérieure de guerre. From 1890 onwards he had seen extensive service in Algeria and Morocco, before a brief tour on the Western Front in command of the 64th Infantry Regiment. The present work was written in part to set straight the record, countering the picture painted by Lawrence in Revolt in the Desert with a "more precise and less romanticised documentation of the intervention in the Hejaz, returning events to their true scale" (Foreword). For his part Lawrence was openly dismissive of Brémond, particularly so in Seven Pillars. The Sykes-Picot agreement had stirred Francophobia in the Arab Bureau, its head and patron of Lawrence, D. G. Hogarth was "especially apprehensive of any vague joint colonial effort in the Middle East; like many of his British contemporaries, he knew and feared the French colonial record in that area and North Africa" (Tarver, p. 593). To this resistance to French influence Lawrence added his own "aversion of most regular soldiers. Hence a double antipathy strongly coloured his attitude towards Brémond. and his staff" (ibid.). The two clashed over the occupation of Aqaba, Brémond favouring an Allied landing from the Red Sea, Lawrence successfully countering with his famous surprise raid from landward, a typically "private venture" undertaken without orders or backing from any British source. Not in Macro; O'Brien F0140. Linda J. Tarver, "In Wisdom's House: T. E. Lawrence in the Near East" in Journal of Contemporary History, 13, 3, 1978. Octavo. With 5 double-page maps to the text. Original printed light card wrappers. Wrappers slightly rubbed and browned, a touch brittle at the edges and spine where there is some cracking, now repaired with slight loss at the head, corresponding small chip from back panel of the wrappers; text block typically lightly browned, but sound. A very good copy.…
