An important anthology, published during the height of the Black Arts Movement, with contributions from over 120 poets representing the global African diaspora. The poems are arranged chronologically by the authors' birth years, but as the subtitle indicates, they trace ba…ck to three major regions. Those from the US range from early historical poetry through the Harlem Renaissance to the Civil Rights era and the Black Arts Movement. Among them are Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Jupiter Hammon, Langston Hughes, and Jean Toomer; Gwendolyn Brooks, Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Ishmael Reed, Bob Kaufman, Etheridge Knight, and many others. Those from the West Indies/the Caribbean focus on anti-colonial struggles, and rhythm of the islands with selections from Claude McKay, and Andrew Salkey (Jamaica); Edward Kamau Brathwaite (Barbados); : Martin Carter (Guyana) and Derek Walcott (Saint Lucia) and more. The African section includes writers from newly independent nations across the continent, primarily writing in English or translated from native idioms: from Nigeria: Wole Soyinka, Christopher Okigbo, and Gabriel Okari; from Ghana: Kofi Awoonor and Kwesi Brew; from South Africa: Dennis Brutus and Keorapetse Kgositsile and from Gambia: Lenrie Peters, to cite just a few. Introduction and brief biographical comments on each poet by Breman. Alphabetical and geographical indexes. 552 pp plus 8 pp publisher's ads. Very good in illustrated wrappers (some scattered marginal notations in pencil, lower corner sligthly bumped).
