Set during WWII, Candide (Cassell) is an orphaned Westphalian who falls in love with the baron's daughter, Cunegonde (Lavi), and is thrown out of the house when the baron discovers them kissing. Candide is drafted and captured by the Nazis, but escapes and joins the Intern…ational Red Cross. His improbable adventures take himto the revolutions of South America, the tribes of Borneo, Moscow, and to racially charged New York. 16 x 27 inches, folded once as issued. Good, with edge tears, creases, and chips, light foxing. Scarce.

This was a quinquina based tonic… (containing quinine), marketed in Belle Époque France as a fortifying and invigorating drink, similar to other "vin quiné" or hygienic tonics of the period. Today the name is best known from high quality advertising pieces: illustrated booklets, brochures, and small albums featuring portraits of Parisian actresses and café concert stars. 16cm x 18cm. 18 pages + 10 lithographs in glassine cover.
