Contemporary calf, spine with five raised bands, rubbed and hinges weak, marbled edges, spine expertly restored.First French edition (orig. in German 1698) of an important work on Siberia and China. It deals with the Russian embassy headed by Everard Isbrand Ides which went overland from Moscow to Peking, written by the secretary of the embassy, Adam Brand. The aim of the expedition was to conclude commercial agreements with the Chinese but, in fact, this was not achieved. The journal describes the Siberian tribes encountered along the route and writes vividly about the visit to China including the embassy's reception in Peking. "His eyewitness reports of the temples visited, the dust on Peking streets, the negotiations with Chinese officials, the official banquets he attended, and so forth, are his most important contributions to Europe's knowledge about Asia" (Lach). Includes a table "des chiffres de la carte" (pp. 183-92) with numbers of cities and other places passed along the route, indicated on the map. The map only to be found in this edition. Line of imprint trimmed off in the second work and small tear to the map ('Relation du voyage de Mr Evert Isbrand'), otherwise a nice and clean copy. First French translation of Adam Brand?s ?Relation du voyage?, an 18-month journey to Beijing where he served as the embassy?s secretary. In 1692, Tsar Peter the Great commissioned Eberhard Isbrand Ides to lead a mission to the Kangxi Emperor of China, with Adam Brand functioning as the embassy's secretary. The delegation, comprising over 250 individuals including noblemen, advisors, merchants, and soldiers, arrived in Beijing after an 18-month journey in 1693. The embassy's primary accomplishment was securing permission for Russians to conduct business in Beijing with a caravan of up to 200 members every three years. The present work became extremely popular in Western Europe and it was quickly translated into various European languages including English (1698 and 1707), French (1699), Dutch (1699) and Spanish (1701). Goodwin, Ides (1657-1709), a German of Dutch origin, was the chief negotiator serving Tsar Peter I of Russia from 1691 to 1695, when he was sent on the first successful Russian embassy to the Kangxi Emperor in Peking. The meeting alleviated some of the tension between the two countries and helped to establish a fur trade. The present work is an account of the 18 month long arduous journey of a caravan of some 250 advisors, merchants and soldiers who made their way through Siberia to Peking. Ides was accompanied by Adam Brand (1692?-1746) a German merchant and Ides? secretary who is the author of the present work. This English translation is based on an account published in Hamburg (Beschreibung der Chinesischen Reise. B. Schillern) in the same year. It is a tribute to the speed with which information passed between countries. Both works are exceedingly rare. A fuller illustrated account of the embassy by Ides Ysbrand (?Three years travels from Moscow over-land to China?) was published in London in 1706.
