A wonderfully rich sammelband, which begins with James Bramston's Horatian 'Art of Politicks', runs through first or…early editions of 'Flora', 'Hurlothrumbo', 'The Beggar's Opera' and its sequel 'Polly', and concludes with an unrecorded early issue of 'Tom Thumb'. Bibliographic note: We term the present unrecorded issue 'First edition, third issue'. The sequence is as follows. Henry Fielding's classic 'Tom Thumb' was first published in April (24th or 25th) 1730 by the London stationer J. Roberts. The first edition was described by Fielding's bibliographer Wilbur Lucius Cross in only one issue (Cross, III, p. 291), though in fact five are now known (inclusive of the present example). All are exceptionally scarce, with the most recent first edition selling in 2015 at Christie's for $18,750. The work was clearly in demand, and the text was swiftly revised; a new slightly longer version was performed on 7 May 1730, and a stated "Second Edition" was published shortly thereafter. The variants of the first edition, meanwhile, are mainly distinguished by differences in the title-page. The issue contained in the present sammelband is a novelty: it bears the title-page of Huntingdon 123351, which is a first edition; what follows is the text of the stated "Second Edition" (as identified by additional scenes in Act 2). This reveals, for the first time, that the revised text was in fact prepared while the first edition was still being sold. The first edition issues can therefore be classified as follows: the two states without a price on the title-page can be called 'first issue', the two that bear the price "6 Pence" or "6d" on the title-page (both known in single copies at the Huntingdon) can be called 'second issue', and the present version, with "6 Pence", no edition statement but the extended text, can be called 'third issue'. Evidently it is of the utmost rarity, and is also the most illuminating of all early issues in bibliographic terms, as it clearly marks a transition between the set of first issues and the stated second edition. While 'The Art of Politicks' is relatively common, and Flora is a third edition, both 'The Beggar's Opera' and (especially) its sequel 'Polly' are scarce first editions. (Note that both lack the printed music that is sometimes included - though often absent.) The volume contains many of the high-points of Augustan satire. The wonderfully titled Hurlothrumbo, for example, is the work of Samuel 'Maggoty' Johnson, a dancing-master from Cheshire, who played the lead role - replete with stilts and a fiddle. In his 'Life of Henry Fielding', Frederick Lawrence writes of Hurlothrumbo that "A more curious or a more insane production has seldom issued from human pen." Gay's 'Beggar's Opera', meanwhile, is perhaps the most famous of all Augustan satires, and is still performed. The sequel, 'Polly', was considered too blatant a satire to be performed and was banned until its debut in 1777. The volume retains its original board but has been attractively and very skilfully rebacked, probably in the late nineteenth century. It bears the armorial bookplate of William Henry Mason of Morton Hall, near Retford (who in 1918 became High Sherrif of Nottinghamshire). The corners are bumped, but the contents are generally in very good condition, noting only some browning and very occasional annotations and markings.

James Bramston (1694?-1743) was a Sussex clergyman with a reputation for wit and an ability to find favor in high places. This, his first published poem, was many times… reprinted and anthologized. The object of the satire is simple enough: to expose the absurdities of contemporary political life, as expressed in Parliament, the press, and the literary world, without favoring any particular party or faction. The poem is full of allusions to contemporary celebrities -- Walpole and Pulteney, Addison and Thomas Tickell, Jacob Tonson and Edmund Curll, and Pope, Swift, and 'Johnny Gay'. Pope had already described Bramston in his Dunciad (1728) as a clever preacher, and he has praise for this poem in one of his letters. The Latin of Horace is printed at the foot of each page; the curious frontispiece, referring to the opening lines, has the face of a man, the mane of a gelding, the feathers of a macaw, the bosom of a lady, and the tale of a cod. The first attempt to sort out the various printings of this poem was by Iolo Williams, in his Points in Eighteenth-Century Verse (pp. 63-67): 'Of all the books investigated for the purposes of the present volume, that to give the most curious result is the successful imitation of Horace's Art of Poetry written by James Bramston. Mr. P. J. Dobell was kind enough to lend me, for examination, twelve copies of the poem, Messrs. Pickering and Chatto lent me five more, and I already possessed another. What was my surprise to find, on laying these eighteen copies together, that they belonged to at least six different editions, each of which, seen by itself, might pass for the first edition.' Williams's conclusions have essentially been accepted by Foxon, though the bibliography is made somewhat more complicated by the existence of copies with mixed sheets from different impressions. This first edition is the only printing to have the text paged separately from the preliminaries (often a positive sign of precedence); the woodcut ornament on the title-page is a head with scroll-work at the sides and a dish of flowers on top. What Williams did not notice is that some copies, as here, are printed on fine paper, with an eagle and crown watermark, as opposed to the letters 'FS'. Foxon cites a corresponding notice in the Monthly Chronicle: 'There's for the curious a small number on royal paper. Price 1s. 6d.' A very good copy, from the library of John Brett-Smith, with his pencilled note (but not recognizing that this is a copy on fine paper); as often, the plate is trimmed close at the left, touching the border. This Second Edition features a wonderful Kitchen Frontispiece engraved by M. v(an) der Gucht. ESTC T22443 Foxon, K59. The Volume is in Very Good Condition. Bound in full calf Cambridge style, with spines divided into five compartments by four raised bands, with red letter-pieces in the second and third compartments from the top as well as a small paper label affixed to the top compartment. Externally the boards and spines are lightly scuffed in general, with splits to most hinges, but still holding well. The frontispiece to Art of Politicks with old repair just touching image. Internally the leaves are generally clean and well margined, with mild foxing or toning throughout, with the last leaf in Modern poetry somewhat stained, with little else in the way of stains or tears. The last blank leaf with early manuscript notes in a neat hand on Dr. King. The volume measures 19 x 13 x 2.5 cm. Each leaf measures 190 x 120 mm.
