In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. D/J is good. The book is in good used condition. These long walks were the expeditions into Central Africa to discover the sources of the White Nile, undertaken by Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890), John Hanning Speke (1827-1864), James Augustus Grant (1827-1892) and Samuel White Baker (1821-1893). Burton was also famous as a translator. There were three expeditions on which these British explorers made their journeys into a great un-mapped darkness, we know more about the moon today than was then known about Central Africa. In 1850, no European had entered the interior for some eighteen hundred years. The first journey was made by Burton and Speke between 1857 and 1859, setting out from and returning to Zanzibar, in which Lake Tanganyika was explored and Lake Victoria discovered by Speke. The second journey was made by Speke and Grant in 1860-1863, going from Zanzibar to the northern shores of Lake Victoria, on to Uganda and Unyoro, and finishing at the Nile trading station of Gondokoro in the Sudan. The third journey was made by the Bakers between 1863 and 1865 (Mrs. Baker was fifteen years younger than her husband, a blonde, beautiful Hungarian, Florence Ninian von Sass. They went from Gondokoro after meeting Speke and Grant there-southwards to discover Lake Albert, returning over roughly the same route." You will receive the book seen in the image. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
