The book, which first came out in 1950, is annotated throughout in pencil by Bradbury with many crossing outs, paragraphs in brackets, marginal linings, a few handwritten changes and comments (2 in ink). He appears to have divided the book up into 9 parts. This is likely to have been for the script of a TV adaptation. D J Taylor wrote in the New Statesman 16/12/2002 ÒÉhe (Cooper) felt that honours, recognition, more or less the entire literary current of the time - he was especially down on academe - had passed him by. The TV adaptation of Scenes From Provincial Life, scripted by Malcolm Bradbury, which could have put everything right, was never made. The novels began to go out of print.'. Malcolm Bradbury wrote in his introduction to a re-issue of the book in 1969 that '.a good part of the literary styles and temper of the 1950s was set by this book.Õ Some rubbing, slight lean, some modest wear else near vg.
