In den WarenkorbA unique collection charting the publishing process of this arresting Indo-European linguistic venture. Following criticism for errors in the first edition, the author enlisted the help of Ahmad Jan, a foundational figure in modern Pashto literature and the son of Richard Burton's Pashto tutor. The corrections to these copies ma…y be in his hand. Ahmad Jan (1883-1952) worked as Pashto tutor to many British officers, including field marshals Auchinleck and Montgomery. "Jan used to use Pashto idioms in his teaching to the Europeans as an integral part of the course. [and] worked in a senior position in the Peshawar cantonment board" (Masid). He was given the title of Khan Bahadur by the British Indian Government. Cecil Boyle was a colonel in the 11th Bengal Lancers, awarded a DSO in 1921 for his service in Mesopotamia. This collection comprises one uncorrected proof copy, two corrected proof copies presented by the publisher to the author on 1 August 1938, and one published copy. The corrections to the proof copies range from inserting missing brackets to rewriting the final two entries. Almost every correction was actioned in the published edition, although a few such as the misspelling of "obtainable" on page 20 were left to the errata list. Some minor mistakes remain in the published edition. The corrected proof copies are not identical. WorldCat lists only 7 institutional copies of the published second edition, 2 of which are in the University of Haifa and the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar. Provenance: one corrected proof copy from the library of Victor S. M. de Guinzbourg, with his bookplate to the front pastedown. De Guinzbourg was an authority on proverbs and maxims, and put together one of the largest book collections on the subject. He published his own book of proverbs, Wit and Wisdom of the United Nations (1961), collected from UN officials and diplomats including the first 23 presidents of the General Assembly. T. K.
