In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First Edition. First printing of the first bilingual edition, and first edition in English, published in the UK by Calder & Boyars in 1971. Translated by David Burg and Arthur Boyars. This is the less common hardcover issue - there was also a paper-covered issue with a larger print-run. Issued as No. 12 in the Signature series of shorter works, distinguished by the highly personal and imaginative approach of the author to his subject (as stated on the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***Near fine in light-grey cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are beautifully bright, clean and unmarked. No bumps. No creases. Corners sharp. Page block edges spotless, including the top edge. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine, with no inscriptions. Clean pages without any foxing. No creases or tears. ***In a near fine printed dustwrapper, which has been neatly corner price-clipped. The dustwrapper is complete, with just minimal rubbing at the edges. No creases, chips or tears. Spine of dustwrapper very clean with light fading to the red titles. Back panel of dustwrapper nice and clean even though white. ***204mm x 136mm. 77 pages including a Note on the Poems plus two pages of titles in the Signature series. ***'This collection of twenty-one poems composed in a Moscow prison while Yuli Daniel was under investigation, and on trial is the first volume of Daniel's poetry ever to be published and, as such, offers a unique record of his remarkable poetic achievement. (Quote taken from the back panel of the dustwrapper) ***'Yuli Markovich Daniel (15 Nov 1925 - 30 Dec 1988) was a Russian writer and Soviet dissident known as a defendant in the Sinyavsky-Daniel trial in 1966. Daniel wrote and translated works of stories and poetry critical of Soviet society under the pseudonyms Nikolay Arzhak and Yu. Petrov published in the West to avoid censorship in the Soviet Union. Daniel and Andrei Sinyavsky were convicted of anti-Soviet agitation in a show trial, becoming the first Soviet writers convicted solely for their works and for fiction, serving five years at a labour camp.' (Wiki) ****First printing of the first bilingual edition, and first edition in English, in really nice collectable condition. An uncommon book in hardcover, especially in this near fine condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
