Les adultes somt extremenent véleoces aussi bien à la course qu'au vol et armés de très fortes ma…ndibules acérées. Insectes vivement colorés, leurs élytres portent des taches variables selon les espèces, permettant l'identification. L'habitat préféré correspond à des plages sableuses aussi bien des bordures maritimes ou fluviales que véritablement terrestres. Malgré le faible nombre d'espèces (16), la totalité de la France métropolitaine est occupée par les Cicindèles, du bord de mer aux fortes altitudes (3000 m), meme si le midi méditerranéen est plus favorable. Tiger beetles are beetles belonging to the family Cicindelidae, a family that has definitively separated from the Carabidae. They are formidable predatory insects, both adults and larvae, despite their small size. Adults are extremely swift in both flight and running, and armed with very strong, sharp mandibles. These brightly colored insects have elytra with variable spots depending on the species, allowing for identification. The preferred habitat is sandy beaches, whether along the coast or river banks, or on land. Despite the small number of species (16), all of metropolitan France is occupied by tiger beetles, from the seaside to high altitudes (3,000 m), although the Mediterranean Sea is more favorable.
