Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Leichte Gebrauchsspuren; Leichte Verschmutzung / Farbtonveranderung. Affinities and contrasts in the work of two icons of modern sculpture In terms of modern sculpture, there are few artists who can claim the same level of influence as Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) and Hans "Jean" Arp (1886-1966). Rodin's naturalistic rather than decorative approach to sculpture revolutionized the field in the late 19th century, while Arp prompted another wave of experimentation in the early 1900s with his abstract sculpture. In this volume, the oeuvres of both pioneers are placed in conversation with one another to demonstrate their artistic affinities as well as their creative contrasts. As Rodin moved away from the preeminent trends of mythological allegory in order to focus on the organic elegance of the human figure, he eventually approached an Impressionistic style. Arp, as an early member of the Dadaist movement, reinterpreted many of the trends brought forth by Rodin, emphasizing abstraction as a means for conveying pathos. This publication allows readers to appreciate the evolution of both artists individually and in the context of art history as a as sculptural milestones, the creations of Rodin and Arp provide a vivid illustration of fundamental developments in modern sculpture stylistically and ideologically. Curator Raphael Bouvier provides textual insight along with several other acclaimed art scholars, including Catherine Chevillot, Director of the Musee Rodin.…

Oktav. Zeitgenössisches, goldgepr. Halbleinen mit marmorierten Bezügen (leicht berieben und lichtrandig). VIII, 309 (+1) S., 2 Bll., mit einem Porträtfrontispiz. Insgesamt wohlerhaltenes Exemplar. Erste Ausgabe (édition française et originale). - PROVENANCE: The book offered comes from the library of the world-famous Karl-Sudhoff-Institute for the History of Medicine (and Sciences) of the Leipzig University, which was dispersed by sale by the end of 2018. The institute was the first of its kind in the world when it was founded in 1906 and through its existence it gained much considerable relevance for the international emergence of a modern history of science and the source-based cultural studies. The institute was overseen by Karl Sudhoff, the most important historian of medicine of the 20th century, as was the annexed library that contained a high number of volumes sent (and sometimes even dedicated) to him personally. After Sudhoff's death in 1938 the institute was renamed to Karl-Sudhoff-Institut in honour of his achievements. All books from this library offered by us (about 2.500) were properly withdrawn from the Leipzig University Libraries holdings and bear corresponding marks (such as handwritten signatures on spines, stamps on titlepages or fly leaves). In general these were added to the volumes in a very careful manner and do not or only to a very small or neglectable degree affect the aesthetical appearance of the books. - Erste Ausgabe (édition française et originale). - PROVENANCE: The book offered comes from the library of the world-famous Karl-Sudhoff-Institute for the History of Medicine (and Sciences) of the Leipzig University, which was dispersed by sale by the end of 2018.
