In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Brown buckram cloth to this 1868 hardback book published by D. Appleton (New York). Cover has some rubbings and shelf wear. Former owner's name is stamped on 1st end paper "H. W. Guy, Muscotah, Kansas". In 1869, "Watson and Guy" opened a hardware store in Muscotah, Kansas and we believe that is probably H. W. Guy. Muscotah, Kansas. Muscotah was being developed along the Central Branch Union Pacific Railroad at exactly that time: the railroad acquired the new townsite in 1867, and it was surveyed that fall. Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. Ex library hardback with D/J, usual stamps/markings. 1969 facsimile of original 1846 edition published by David & Charles Publishers Ltd., Newton Abbot. This is a reproduction of the history and description of the Great Western Railway. from drawings taken expressly for this work and executed in lithography by John C. Bourne. It is not an exact facsimile since some material is not of railway, artistic or historical interest. All the railway material and plates are however reproduced here. Part of the 2nd page of the preface is no longer operative since the material, including the appendix, has been deleted. The omissions include a list of plates, sections of text on General Topography, Geology and General Antiquities, the illustrations of churches and the appendices on Church notes and on the Geology of the Neighbourhood of Bristol. The original pagination has not been changed meaning there are some gaps as between pages 13 and 30; the illustration on page 13 originally appeared over the list of plates. Although colour codes are shown for the section of the GW Railway and the map on the following page, neither in fact contained colour in their original state. D/J very worn and broken in places, shelf wear & page edges are grubby & there are some handling marks to pages, hinge on front end papers is split in places but binding is intact - otherwise text & plates are clean. Will despatch within 24 hours from UK. This is a very large book will ship overseas for extra postage. BS-4*. …

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Bourne's Great Western Railway: A Reproduction of the History and Description of the Great Western Railway - Large Folio Illustrated Facsimile Author: John C. Bourne Publisher: David & Charles Reprints, Newton Abbot, Devon Publication Date: 1970 (some bibliographical records give 1969) Edition: First Facsimile Edition - Reprint of the 1846 Original Binding: Hardcover, Large Folio Condition: Very Good (provisional) Dust Jacket: Good ISBN: 0715346881 Language: English Format: Large Folio, approximately 54 × 39 cm Book Description A magnificent large-format facsimile reproduction of John C. Bourne's celebrated The History and Description of the Great Western Railway, originally published in London by David Bogue in 1846. Published by David & Charles Reprints around 1970, this impressive volume faithfully reproduces one of the most important illustrated records of Britain's early railway age. John Cooke Bourne (1814-1896) was among the foremost nineteenth-century artists specialising in railway engineering and industrial landscapes. His extraordinary lithographs recorded the construction and early operation of the Great Western Railway, capturing the bridges, tunnels, viaducts, stations and engineering achievements of the pioneering railway era. The original work provides a remarkable visual record of the railway connecting London with Bristol, including Brunel's pioneering engineering works and the dramatic transformation of the British landscape during the Industrial Revolution. The illustrations are particularly celebrated for their architectural precision, artistic composition and historical significance. They depict locomotives emerging from tunnels, vast railway viaducts, major stations and the impressive civil engineering works that made the Great Western Railway one of the outstanding achievements of nineteenth-century Britain. This substantial facsimile reproduces the original engraved and lithographed illustrations on a generous scale, allowing their exceptional detail to be fully appreciated. The volume retains its original pictorial dust jacket, featuring Bourne's atmospheric illustration of a steam locomotive emerging from a tunnel. A highly desirable publication for collectors of British railway history, industrial archaeology, nineteenth-century engineering, Brunel memorabilia and historical illustrated works. Condition Description Book: Very Good Dust Jacket: Good. An impressive large-format hardcover volume retaining its original illustrated dust jacket, currently housed in a transparent protective covering. The dust jacket displays age-related discolouration, particularly around the edges, together with creasing, rubbing and small tears or wear at the corners and extremities. Several old bookseller's labels remain attached to the front cover, including a previous auction label. Internally, the illustrated title page and facsimile title page appear clean and well preserved, with the illustrations retaining excellent clarity and detail. The pages shown are bright, with only minor age-related wear. The visible illustrations are beautifully reproduced, displaying the fine architectural and engineering detail characteristic of Bourne's original lithographs. A handsome and substantial volume, retaining considerable visual appeal despite wear to its original dust jacket. Please refer to the accompanying photographs, which show the actual condition of the book.…

Red-brown boards with black spine-strip and gold lettering, in pictorial dust-jacket. 393 x 540 x 23mm. 58 text pages + diagram showing section of the railway + 2pp of maps + extensive section of mostly full-page b/w drawings. Pages 45 to 58 (7 leaves) have slight damage at bottom corner, originally 2 leaves being folded with 137mm fold across corner, evidently during manufacture, then neighbouring leaves somehow worn/deteriorated near fold, resulting in thinning of paper and small holes; all pages remain intact however, and damage in no way affects readability of text or pictures; jacket is also nibbled/worn along edges, mainly bottom edge but also near head of spine; otherwise both book cover and internal pages are very clean and almost as new.
