In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Jacket, as Issued. Fourth Edition. Fourth edition, published in 1827. The work was originally published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown in 1811 [first edition], and reprinted in 1815 {second edition] and 1822 [third edition]. ***Very good in the original plain buff boards. Edges of boards rubbed. Corners of boards slightly bumped. An old surface splash marks to front board not affecting front pastedown or interior pages. Spine tight. A very few light sporadic fox-spots to margins of a few pages. Most interior pages clean. Very light unobtrusive offsetting to edges of front and rear endpapers. Light vertical crease to title-page [printed on thin paper]. Pages clean. Tiniest unobtrusive owner inscription in soft pencil to top of rear free endpaper: ' P.B.84, B. McLeish & Sons, 18 Jan 1945, 2/-' (can easily be erased if wished, but shows when and where the book was purchased). ***228 mm x 146 mm. 221 pages. ***A man came to St. Bartholomew's Hospital from Oxfordshire, with three diseased lymphatic glands, each the size of a very large plum. They were situated beneath the basis of the jaw, upon the mylohyoideus muscle. They resisted the attempts which had been made to discuss them; and had not been removed, from an apprehension that a dangerous hoemorrhage would take place in the operation. The glands had gradually, though very slowly, attained their present magnitude, for the disease was of fifteen years' duration. The surrounding parts were not affected. Sir Charles Blicke undertook and accomplished the removal of the diseased gland, the structure of which was exactly as has been described. This case is related in the first place, as it shows most clearly the usual characteristics of this species of diseased structure; which are those of slowly increasing, of not being prone to inflammation, or tending to suppuration. ***It may not be improper to mention, though it is irrelevant to the present subject, that in the operation, the external maxillary artery was unavoidably divided. It did not, however, bleed immediately after the operation, so that this circumstance was not perceived; and the edges of the wound were brought together by one suture---' (Quote Case III page 35-36). ***John Abernethy [1764 - 1831 ] was a surgeon and medical practitioner, who spent much of his career at St Bartholomew's [Bart's] as a surgeon and lecturer. He began to give lectures at his house in Bartholomew Close, which were so well attended that the governors of the hospital built a theatre (1790-1791), and Abernethy thus became the founder of the medical school of St Bartholomew's. He held the office of assistant-surgeon for twenty-eight years until 1815, when he was elected principal surgeon. ***An early antiquarian edition of Surgical Observations by John Abernethy, complete in original plain boards. ***Of interest to collectors of historical surgical and medical antiquarian titles. Uncommon. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
