A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of General Boulanger, with the caption ''La Revanche''. Accompanied by a one page biographical sheet. Georges Ernest Jean-Marie Boulanger (April 29, 1837 - September 30, 1891) was a French general and reactionary politician.

A nice item relating to a significant figure in French nineteenth-century history. Such was Boulanger's popularity with the French working classes in the late 1880s that it was believed that he could make himself dictator. Stylish and dynamic signature ('Genl: Boulanger'), on back of 9.5 x 6.5 cm calling card. In good condition, lightly aged. The words 'Général Boulanger' are printed in large letters on the front of the card, and nothing else. From the autograph album of the novelist George Meredith's daughter Marie Eveleen (Mariette; 1871-1933), later the wife of Henry Parkman Sturgis (1847-1929), American-born banker and Liberal politician. Probably acquired after Boulanger's flight to London in 1889. See image. Note: Extracted from an Album of Autograph Letters created by Meredith's daughter which included letters to George Meredith from distinguished fellow-writers (as here) such as Henry James, George Eliot but also from people of distinction (such as Wellington and Clemenceau) to other correspondents.

The present item dates from a year of turmoil for Boulanger. At the start of 1889 it had seemed likely that he would exploit his tremendous working-class support to become dictator, but by April a warrant had been issued for his arrest and he had fled first to Brussels and then to London, before setting in Victor Hugo style in Jersey. He would return to Brussels in 1891, to shoot himself dead at the grave of his recently-deceased mistress. Complete 12 x 9.5 cm white envelope. In fair condition, lightly aged, and with back flap torn. All in Boulanger's hand, with his underlined signature at bottom left, the writing on the front cover of the envelope reads: 'Demande d'autorisation. / à Son Excellence / Monsieur le Gouverneur. / Saint-Hélier. / Ile de Jersey. / Genl. Boulanger.' Beneath the top line, in pencil: 'for Elizabeth Castle.-' On the reverse, in a contemporary hand, in ink: 'Autograph Letter & Envelope of Genl. Boulanger / 18 Nor. 1889'. The letter is not present.

First Edition. Quarto, 384pp. The first of three volumes. Publisher's original wrappers bound in, with numerous maps and illustrated plates. Red pebbled cloth, title in gilt on spine. Red speckled edges. Solid text block, sunned spine, bumped corners, faint foxing throughout. Endpapers are foxed with light transference. The first volume only, featuring an inscription from Boulanger on the half title. Inscription reads: "Monsieur Balfour / membre de parlement / cordial souvenir / Gnl Boulanger." General Georges Ernest Jean-Marie Boulanger (1837-1891) was a charismatic leader who rose rapidly in the ranks of the French Army, eventually becoming Minister of War in 1886. The general attracted public admiration for his reformist stance and his tough posture on foreign policy, especially against Germany, with the French citizenry calling him Général Revanche or "General Revenge." The Parliamentary Republic feared a coup by Boulanger and a return to authoritarian rule. However, his political movement collapsed after he fled the country to evade arrest, and his subsequent return to France ended in tragedy when he committed suicide at the grave of his mistress in 1891, marking the abrupt end of his political aspirations. Arthur James Balfour, 1st Earl of Balfour (1848-1930) served as British Prime Minister from 1902 to 1905. He later served as British Foreign Secretary during World War I, where he issued the Balfour Declaration, supporting the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people in Palestine.". Dating from the height of Boulanger's popularity in 1888 to his subsquent exile in Brussels, where he died in 1891, these documents offer an insight into the firebrand general's dealings with the press, the exiled house of Bonaparte, and his family. Many of the items seem to be from the archives of Le Figaro, in particular those of Gaston Calmette (editor 1894-1914). - 1) Autograph letter signed by Boulanger to an unknown recipient, dated 11 June 1888, declining to enter into a proposed financial arrangement on the grounds it could damage his credibility: "Je suis tout disposé à vous prêter mon appui moral, mais je ne puis en aucune façon entrer dans la combinaison financière que vous me proposez [.] si honorable qu'elle soit et je tiens plus que jamais à ce que mon nom ne se trouve mêlé à aucune opération financière. Vous devez comprendre la réserve qui m'est imposée par ma situation; mes ennemis ne manqueraient pas de redoubler leurs attaques, en disant que je spécule sur l'ouvrier". - 2) Autograph letter signed (dated only "mardi matin", but by the letterhead within his tenure as a member of the Chambre des Députés) to a Monsieur Maquard, seemingly a journalist at Le Figaro, expressing his displeasure at a hostile piece the paper had published the previous Friday: "Il est vrai que c'est un allemand gallophobe qui prononce en paroles mensongères, mais j'éstime que l'article n'aurait pas perdu à leur suppression". - 3) Calling card of the general dated Paris, unsigned, dated 27 June 1888, agreeing to meet an unknown person at the times requested ("les mardi jeudi et samedi de 9 heures at 11 heures"), accompanied by a photo card showing the general in full uniform. - 4) Fragmentary transcript of an interview with the Boulanger in Brussels published on 9 May 1891 in Le Figaro by Gaston Calmette, accompanied by an envelope bearing the emblem of Le Figaro (a capital F crossed with a quill) giving the date of its publication and noting the corrections in pencil are in the General's hand. In the text, Boulanger expresses his indignation at the failure of the French state to improve the lot of the workers: "La chambre, ajoute-t-il, a déclaré lundi qu'elle allait étudier bientôt l'amélioration du sort des ouvriers! Il en serait temps si elle n'était pas impuissante!" and furthermore comments on his exile: "Si j'étais resté à Paris en avril 1889, on m'aurait arrêté, emprisonné et expedié en Nouvelle-Calédonie". - 5) A telegram to Calmette by the General's daugher, Jeanne Boulanger, asking him if she can write to her father and expressing her pain at not having seen him in so long. The stamp on the outside reads 17 Nov 94 but this probably dates to shortly after the interview above, as it speaks of Boulanger as alive and he died on 30 September 1891. - 6) An anonymous letter, clearly to a newspaper (probably Le Figaro) dated Geneva, 16 September (year unstated, but probably 1888) about a supposed meeting between Boulanger and Prince Napoléon-Jérôme Bonaparte (1822-91) at the latter's residence in exile in Prangins, Switzerland: "En reproduisant ma lettre relative à la présence du Général Boulanger à Prangins, vous relevez l'improbabilité de cette nouvelle en faisant remarquer que le prince était parti pour Turin depuis dix jours. Vous aurez vu vous-même que mon renseignement était parfaitement d'accord avec les possibilités". - At the height of his power, Boulanger's popularity threatene.

Diese Fragen bezogen sich auf die Zeitung "La Voix du Peuple", ein angebliches Begnadigungsschreiben Boulangers an Carnot und die französisch-russische Allianz. Die genannte Zeitung war das Hauptorgan des sog. "Boulangismus" und richtete sich laut Boulanger an eine demokratische Elite. Boulanger bezeichnet den deutsch-französischen Krieg von 1870/71 als schweres Unrecht beider Völker. Die Eroberung von Elsass-Lothringen sei ein großer Fehler gewesen, der zu permanenten Unruhen führt: "[.] Contumacé, frappé d'un jugement rendu par un tribunal d'exception, décrétant pour satisfaire sa haine politique la proscription d'un homme dont le seul crime est d'avoir obtenu deux cent quarante mille suffrages à Paris, je n'ai qu'à attendre dans l'exil l'heure qui me semblera propice pour faire réviser ce monstreux procès [.]" - Bekannt als "Général Revanche" modernisierte Boulanger als Kriegsminister von 1886-87 das französische Militär. Ende der 1880er Jahre war er charismatischer Anführer der autoritär-populistischen Bewegung des Boulangismus. Dadurch geriet er in politischen Widerspruch zur Regierung der Dritten französischen Republik, wurde von seinen Gegnern der Verschwörung bezichtigt und zur Deportation verurteilt. Boulanger flüchtete nach Jersey und erschoss sich am 30.
