Zustand: as new. Amsterdam & Maarssen : APA - Holland University Press, 1984. Paperback. lii,346 pp, plate. 23x15 cm. French & English text. - Critical study of the correspondence of Henri Basnage de Beauval (1656/57-1710) connected with his learned journal Histoire des ouvrages des savans. The book publishes and annotates approximately one hundred letters and provides a thematic and analytical index. Basnage's Histoire des ouvrages des savans was one of the major learned journals of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. It began publication in Rotterdam in 1687, under the imprint of Reinier Leers, and continued until 1709. Its principal purpose was to provide critical accounts of recently published works within the European Republic of Letters. This period was a crucial transitional moment between the late seventeenth-century Republic of Letters and the emerging intellectual culture of the Enlightenment. Basnage belonged to a distinguished Huguenot family and became an important intellectual figure in the Dutch Republic after the persecution of French Protestants. He acted as an intermediary between different scholarly communities. His correspondence with Pierre Bayle, Jacques Bernard, Jean Le Clerc, Bernard de Montfaucon, Christiaan Huygens, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, John Stuart Mill, Hans Sloane, and Gisbert Cuper combined erudition with journalism and critical evaluation. He was therefore not merely reporting information: he participated in determining which books, ideas, controversies, and discoveries deserved attention within the European learned public. Condition : as new copy. ISBN 9789030210054. Keywords : LITERARY CRITICISM, enlightenment Huguenot studies.…

paperback, 16x24 cm, 112 pagina's. ISBN 9789460040528. 0 g.…
