Indispensable to this process of integration was the ability to absorb foreign artistic formulas, devise innovative creations and integrate them into mutated patterns that were always defined by local material and intellectual conditions and resources.This volume explores the making and metamorphosis of images and memories of European Medieval Bishops as individual personalities or institutional figures within the framework of their respective cathedrals. The studies discuss the circumstances and factors that have determined funerary configurations and ritual remembrances of bishops in cathedrals and ecclesiastical colleges in the Medieval Latin Church. The authors of this volume adopt and implement a dual and complementary methodology. First, they take into account a wide range of factors, including specific community practices, liturgical ceremonies, church furnishings, and artistic equipment. Second, they explore to which the morphology of individual tombs can be ascribed to the preferences of patrons who, hypothetically, would also have imposed a religious protocol as the patrons of the future commemoration of their personalities. In these novel studies, special attention is paid to the symbiosis of pictorial narratives, liturgical performativity, and spatial arrangement, which made up and propitiated a large part of the visual experience of episcopal memorials. The volume focuses on the use of the memorial devices of important bishops as a privileged lens to analyse the complexity and dynamics of the artistic landscape in western Europe during the Middle Ages.…

Los análisis contenidos en estas páginas examinan los contextos históricos y artísticos en los que surgieron diferentes catedrales. Los estudios aquí reunidos nacen de la conciencia de que algunos de nuestros monumentos catedralicios aún requieren una relectura bajo ópticas diferentes y complementarias. Hemos pretendido ensanchar vías de estudio relativas a la fabricación de los marcos arquitectónicos, pero también del uso ritual de las catedrales operadas entre los siglos IX y XIII. This book is intended to help shed light on the material properties, visual layouts and ceremonial attributes of a representative selection of medieval cathedrals - the buildings that provide a physical foundation for the construction of the complex and plural European identity. The analyses in this collection examine the historical and artistic contexts in which different cathedrals emerged. The papers collected here were born of the realisation that some of our cathedral monuments still require further examination, under different and complementary lenses. The authors have tried to expand the channels of enquiry relating to both the architectural influences and the ritual uses of cathedrals built from the 9th to 13th centuries. They have used the data available on the construction history of each building to attempt to explain the reasons behind its morphogenesis and metamorphosis. To strengthen this knowledge, they have investigated the theological imagery and the devotional and functional motives that, taken together, altered each cathedral's original configuration. The results have been tellingly diverse.…

These pages analyze the plurality of the European landscape through eleven cathedrals, created between the fourth and fifteenth centuries across the European geographical and cultural breadth. The architectural features of each cathedral are the result of a complex process of morphogenesis that is constantly defined by the local conditions of space, building material, etc. For these reasons, each author reveals in the respective case study how the ritual spaces and the cultic and commemorative devices that legitimized their relationship with the past, the particular devotions, the diachronic and synchronic crossroads and their relationships with the secular and religious elites were generated, modified and organized. Crucial to this integrative process was the movement of patrons and master builders, as well as their ability to adopt new approaches and integrate them into established patterns. The cathedrals studied in this volume were highly innovative centers that exported successful models. In some cases, their proposals were formulated on the substratum of Roman antiquity, often reinterpreted. Furthermore, special attention is given to the memorial competencies of devices and liturgical furnishings, that constituted a large part of the visual and mnemonic experience inside their ceremonial spaces. Through the study of the selected cathedrals it is revealed that each and every one of them sought to affirm two complementary realities: what role each one aspired to play in the history of Universal Salvation and, at the same time, how to articulate the spaces of the monument to give place and temporality to the memory itself, extolling the most relevant powerful personalities in the framework of the lay community.
