In these lectures I hope to investigate one aspect of t…he story, particularly as it concerns the influence of the American Episcopal Church at a crucial stage.' (p. 3) -- `All kinds of circumlocutions were used--"the Protestant Episcopal Churches of Great Britain and America," "the Communion of mutual good offics which ought to subsist between kindred branches of the Church of Christ." "the unity subsisting between the different branches of the Reformed Catholic Church," "that substantial unity which exists in the Reformed Episcopal church throughout the world." The awkwardness of these and similar variations is explained by the fact that the ecclesiastical reality behind them was for so long vague and undefined. It is probably not a coincidence that the first examples I can discover of the use of the term "Anglican Communion" occur in writings and addresses connected with the S.P.G. Jubilee and the General Convention of 1853. At this point the new consciousness of solidarity and intercommunion demanded some clear and convenient designation; the name "Anglican Communion" met the need, and quickly won common acceptance.'
