The 1865 code of civil procedure was the first adopted by Italy after unification (1861) was strongly influenced by the Code Napoleon. It remained in force until 1942. Borsari was an important lawyer, law professor and politician. His publications on the legal codes of post-unification Italy were standard works. First published in 1865, with a final edition in 1881, Codice is a heavily annotated edition of the 1869 code of civil procedure. First published in 1867, with a final edition in 1887, Pratica is a companion treatise. Bibliographically distinct, these two works are often found together in uniform bindings. Ciriaci [1885-1966] was a formidably learned Catholic Cardinal who held doctorates in philosophy, theology and canon law. He had several important positions in his long career, among them prefect of the Sacred Congregation of the Council in the Roman Curia (1954-1966) and president of the Pontifical Commission for the Revision of the Code of Canon Law (1955-1966). In all editions, few copies of either title.
