A translation of the Gospel of Luke into the Caló language of the Iberian Roma (Gitanos), the first substantial book to be published in any Romani tongue. The work of the British ling…uist and translator George Borrow (1803-81), this volume represents not only a milestone in the study of the Romani languages, but an attempt to build a cultural bridge to a marginalised community. "The Committee sanctioned the printing of a small edition (250 copies) of this Gospel, which was published at Madrid in March 1838, but they required the omission of a bilingual vocabulary which the translator proposed to append to the text" (Darlow/M.). - Borrow had a deep-seated sympathy for the Roma, whom he had first encountered in Moscow in 1835. He quickly developed a lifelong fascination with the language, customs and music, and sought them out both at home in Britain and abroad. In addition to Romani, Borrow translated the Bible into Basque and Manchu on his travels, which were funded by the British and Foreign Bible Society. Romani remained his greatest passion, however, and he would go on to produce a dictionary of the language as well as novels inspired by his encounters with the Roma. - Originating in the Indian subcontinent, the Romani language was carried westwards from around 1000 CE, probably via waves of migration through the Persian and Byzantine empires to Europe. Leading an itinerant lifestyle, the Roma have been widely discriminated against and persecuted. Although belonging to the Indo-Aryan family, the Romani language bears the imprint of the long trek, with notable Persian, Armenian, and Balkan features. As it was traditionally a purely oral language, Borrow's translation is the first book-length literary monument to Romani. - A vital monument to the Romani tongues, elegantly bound, and a rarity on the market, with the only copies offered at auction in the last 50 years appearing in 1993 and 1992. - Boards somewhat worn and lightly scuffed, corners bumped. George Borrow (1803-1881) spent most of his thirties as a representative of the British and Foreign Bible Society, first in Russia and then in the Iberian Peninsula fro…m 1835 to 1840. "In Spain, civil war made his expeditions risky, while the hostile attitude of the authorities, coupled with his own provocative approach, led twice to his imprisonment. . In Madrid the Bible Society financed the printing of St Luke's gospel translated into Spanish Romani by Borrow and Gypsy friends" (ODNB). His account of his adventures, The Bible in Spain (1843), was his first literary success. Other works included Lavengro, The Romany Rye, and Wild Wales. These are a set of Borrow's marked proofs for this second edition of the Gospel of St. Luke (first printed in Madrid, 1837). Gathering C is marked Revise May 27/72 with five corrections on pp. 59 and 69; gathering B is marked 2nd Revise Aug. 9/71 and corrects the running head Majaro to Majaró on the left hand pages, with some 22 corrections to the text; gathering E is marked 10th Revise Feb. 9/72 with one marginal note on p. 116. Of this 1871 proof, OCLC records only the copy at the Huntington with corrections in George Borrow's hand (bound in polished brown calf, marbled end-papers, gilt top; purchased from Maggs, Cat. 1924, item 443). Collie and Fraser note a handful of other proofs, citing copies at Fales (NYU), Berg (NYPL), Brotherton (Leeds), Liverpool, and in the Norfolk Record Office, Norwich. A rare proof from Borrow's late career, returning to a work from his early adventures. Darlow and Moule 4543 edition dated 1872, published by the British and Foreign Bible Society.
