O autor situa a diversidade das pesquisas e descobertas de Florence em diferentes campos, destacando, naturalmente, a participação como membro-desenhista da expedição chefiada pelo barão de Langsdorff. Kossoy demonstra que houve concretamente uma descoberta isolada da fotografia no Brasil a partir de 1833, descoberta mantida praticamente no anonimato por cerca de 140 anos. Para esta nova edição revista e ampliada, o autor acrescentou maiores dados de ordem sociocultural e histórica sobre o Brasil e a Europa no período em que Florence pesquisava.
