O autor situa a diversidade das pesquisas e descobertas de Florence em d…iferentes campos, destacando, naturalmente, a participação como membro-desenhista da expedição chefiada pelo barão de Langsdorff. Kossoy demonstra que houve concretamente uma descoberta isolada da fotografia no Brasil a partir de 1833, descoberta mantida praticamente no anonimato por cerca de 140 anos. Para esta nova edição revista e ampliada, o autor acrescentou maiores dados de ordem sociocultural e histórica sobre o Brasil e a Europa no período em que Florence pesquisava. Os acréscimos feitos ao texto original incluem inúmeras notas relativas aos fatos históricos e técnicos, e estão presentes também no anexo do livro, constituídos pelos diários do inventor.; 456 pages.
