Georges Bordonove raconte aussi comment à bord du vaisseau qui l'emmenait à Sainte-Hélène l'idée vint au proscrit de dicter ses mémoires, léguant ainsi à la postérité l'impérissable image devenue légendaire. Cette extraordinaire mutation psychologique méritait une étude; elle s'inscrit parfaitement dans cet ouvrage historique qui est aussi le plus passionnant des récits. Le plus émouvant également puisqu'il nous permet de découvrir les rêves qui hantent l'Empereur tandis qu'il arpente le pont ou braque sa lorgnette sur l'horizon immense.
