Extremely rare first edition of what would go on to become a best-selling merchant's manual in 19th century France. Bonnet's "Manuel du Capitaliste" remained in print as…late as 1929, but the present first edition, the only one published during the author's lifetime, was evidently printed in few copies and has not survived well: OCLC records just three copies worldwide (at Harvard, Bordeaux, and the BnF). - Since 1789 the de facto interest rate for French debt had been held at 5%, although the market rates fluctuated wildly due to the political turmoil of the Revolutionary and Consulate governments. By 1806, Europe was engulfed in war with Napoleon; yet French bonds only strengthened during this period, driving yields as low as 5.38% (cf. Homer & Sylla, A History of Interest Rates, pp 167-170). In his introduction Bonnet defends the need for interest-bearing loans from the arguments of theologians and philosophers; the legal maximums of 6% set for civil loans and 5% for commercial loans are deemed wholly justifiable, but anything above this is considered usury. The tables which follow allow a 'capitalist' (i.e., one who lends or borrows capital) to calculate the interest due on a principal for any amount of time from 1 day to 366 days. However, the first of Bonnet's folding tables also provides a condensed version of these interest rates for commercial loans which are calculated based on a 'commercial year' of 360 days. - Bonnet's manual was evidently marketed to readers of Tynna's "Almanach du Commerce", who - according to the title-page - helped to publish this first edition. It must have proved indispensable to French money-lenders; a second edition appeared in 1827, and an 11th edition in 1846 (noted in the Goldsmith-Kress collection). Bonnet (1780-1815) did not live long enough to reap any reward from his successful venture; until his death at 35 he continued to serve as the treasurer of the Hotel des Monnaies in Rouen. - Binding a little rubbed; a few instances of foxing or ink staining to scattered leaves; mainly a very pleasant, unsophisticated copy. - Chéron, Catalogue Général de la Librairie Française au 19e Siècle, Volume 2, p. 32.
