The very scarce first edition of the first two volumes of this mid 18th century periodical for 'Old Women'.Volumes I and II only of this work, which extended to three volumes.As called for, volume I illustrated with a frontispiece and engraved title page, with letterpress title page to volume II.The majority of contributions are from 'Mary Midnight', the pseudonym of Christopher Smart, the editor, and with further contributions from John Newbery, Bonnell Thorton and others.ESTC P2385This periodical, aimed at older women, includes poetry, short pieces of literature, and satirical and social commentary. Brief excerpts from periodical 'The Rambler' are also included. In full calf bindings, with blind tooling and gilt detailing to back strips. Light rubbing to back strip, joints, and board perimeters. Front hinges strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to volume II title page. Pages otherwise age toned due to paper type, but generally clean. Very Good. book.
